    Welcome to PR!

I would make one suggestion - others will probably give you more. I would suggest looking for a Canon Rebel 300D. I had that camera before upgrading to the 350XT. This is a great camera. You should be able to get it at a good price now. You could start with the Canon 50mm/f1.8 lens which costs approx $75 or less. It's a sharp lens with good color. It has a reputation for being one of Canons best low cost lenses. It's wonderful for a first lens. You could most likely get both for your budget. Whoops - what is the same amount is US dollars? I was talking dollars - $650.

    Re: Hello

Whatever you decide make sure you play with it first as it has to feel comfortable in the hands with all the buttons where you want them.

Never buy a camera without going into a shop and getting the feel of it.

As for the techy bits Canon and Nikkon are very much the same and depending on who you ask depends on the answer you'll get.

The advice on SLR and 50mm is the way I started and is very good advice. Then look at the type of photos you take and work out what other lenses, tripods, filters etc you need.

    Have fun

DSLR? I have a Canon bias, because I have 3.
The Nikon felt wonderful in my hand, like a glove, but the control positions didn't work for me.
I preferred the control wheel on top like the Canon, rather then on the front like the Nikon.

Definitely go into shops and try the cameras, it's a significant purchase and worth giving them a go in your hand. If you have a CF memory card, take one with you and ask to actually use the cameras and take the images away with you to review on your computer.

For £650 are you looking to buy new, or second hand?
If you're buying second hand Canon, look online at their outlet shop in ebay.
    http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Canon-Outlet
They have a number of refurbished (1 year warranty) cameras.

    Re: Hello

I have the Canon 350D. And love it!
Don't forget what Liz said! First chance you get...get yourself the 50mm 1.8 lens. I think it's about £90 over here. And it's a little diamond! Great portrait lens.
That lens very rarely leaves my camera. You can see some of my results using this lens in my gallery...
