Not with you on this one - at least as far as instrument amps go. There are some really good solid state amps out there and they come close to the sound quality of tubes but not exact. The fact that a lot of the specs are technically worse is only a symptom, it has nothing to do with the final product. The best sounding and loudest amp I've ever played thru had 14 tubes in it and only put out 300w. Specs were nothing compared to my current 1200w system, but that 300w rig would blow you off the stage!

It's the speakers. Speaker designers now days have many more watts so there are not making the supper efficient speakers, but there making supper linear with low distortion that eat the power.

Re: Should I Sell My Film?
I think I've got some of those too... only mine are in the scary dark place of the fridge were my wife doesn't go, next to the unused bait (maggots) I brought back from my fishing trip (steelhead) a few months ago.

Not Kidding
Michael-
I'm not kidding on this one. I don't know anything about double blind tests. But I've listened to plenty of back-to-back vinyl/CD comparisons and the vinyl always sounds wayyyy richer and better than a CD. It's not the same as the film/digital argument. I actually have a higher bit-depth SACD player. Unfortunately, SACDs are hard to find and the format already seems to be fading out.

[QUOTE=Photo-John]I'm moving, haven't shot any film in a couple of years, and still have a big stash of slide film in my fridge. I'm thinking it's time to part with it. What do you think? QUOTE]

Absolutely not! You should divy it up amongst your most loyal followers, like Rick, Brian, Speed, etc.
"I'm thinking it's time to part with it."
Absolutely. Let it go my friend. (See above)
"What do you think?"
Again, see my first response.
I'm glad we had this talk. Now, tell me how much you want for shipping it to me, and I'll get you your money...
PS, I'll take all the Fuji slide film you have!
;-)

Do you have any 120? It doesn't have to be within its date...
Hey, just take an extra film spool and adapt your Holga for 35mm. It looks pretty cool, actually!

Re: Not Kidding
Hm. I still shoot film almost exclusively, and still listen to and collect vinyl.
A correlation? Or am I just prematurely an old fart resistant to change?!

My Decision
After much soul searching, I gave the 35mm film to Photo Dad. Seemed like the right thing to do. Sorry to all of the beggars who were hoping for a windfall :p

I was trying to decide whether to sell it. I had no intention of giving it away. After all, I had to pay for it. But my dad's a good guy and he really likes to take pictures. He's the reason I'm a photographer. So I think it's the least I can do. He got 5 rolls of Velvia 50, 4 rolls of Provia 1600, one roll of Plus-X, and one roll of XP2. Or something like that.
Now he owes us some photo posts, I think. And they'd better be good!
