Stopped by Police pt II i <3 NY

Didache had a run in with the London Police not long ago.
Here is a link to his thread:
    Stopped by the Police ...
Looks like the same thing has happened in New York
I spotted this article & thought I should share.

It is so stupid, so ludicrous, you have to laugh at it.

Our rights continue to be eroded away in the name of "security".

Happened to me a couple of years ago. Pretty awful, actually.

Great clip, Mike. Sums it up nicely.

In this economy it might be worth it to get falsely arrested for what you can make with the lawsuit.

Re: Stopped by Police pt II i <3 NY

I suspect this is happening in most major cities these days. I was walking along Figueroa in LA taking pictures of the buildings and almost everyone had guards that would come out and tell me I couldn't take pictures (even from across the street). Since I was shooting from public property (the street or sidewalk) I argued a bit with them, but eventually moved along. I found that in most cases I could get one or two shots before they would come out, which is really stupid if you think about it.

First off never argue with a cop, you will lose. My brother in law and nephew got pulled over coming out of the midtown tunnel, they were on a corvette run benefiting 9/11 widows and were video taping it. They were stopped and the tape was takin away from them erased and returned, My B in L was given a $250 summons filming without a permit I don;t fault the cops at all there are signs everywhere NO VIDEO.

I've seen a lot of tourists take pics of the trains unmolested, but I did also see that article!
Now, if you're taking photos in airports... that's another story. As I waited for a connecting flight in Philly, I saw a guy taking pics out of the window and then be forced to erase them.

Talk about yet another illusion of security...I supposed they haven't heard of an undelete program? Hasn't this gotten out of hand?

I remember the package for going on a junior high school trip to what was the former USSR (this was early to mid 1980's) and being cautioned not to take pictures of train stations, airports, dockyards, gov't buildings, policemen, etc. Unfortunately didn't get to go on that trip.

Ironic how things have become so similar now.
    Cheers,
    Greg

I'm willing to bet that if a guy wore a smock and beret, took an easel and canvas, set up and started painting, the cops would look over his shoulder and never otherwise bother him/her, no matter how detailed the painting was.

"They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security." - Benjamin Franklin

In the US, taking photos in public places (of buildings, of people, whatever) is a First Amendment right - it is considered "speech." Be reasonable about it, but in general, it is your right to photograph anything you can see from a public area.

Heh heh, I have pictures of ALL that stuff and more, from my several trips to Russia, never hassled once. This was after the fall of the Soviet empire but it was in what was a "closed" city (due to it's large military industrial complex) at the time I was there it had only been open to Americans for a few months.
