How often do you have your camera with you? (take #2)

Sorry about the double post, my computer froze up when I was trying to do the poll.

It seems like many of you stumble upon such great photo opportunities. So I was wondering how many of you just bring your camera everywhere. I'll post a poll.

I always have A camera with me. Not just my D300, but I'll usually have one of my cameras in my bag with me.

I voted 75% of the time, but its more like 85ish. You never know when a photographic opportunity will strike!

Or like last Sunday. I brought my camera bag to my inlaws (it has a laptop case, so I figure might as well bring the gear!) and my buddy calls and says he wants to do a shoot and he'll be by to get me in 5 mins. Since I had my gear, I was ready to go!

Re: How often do you have your camera with you? (take #2)

I'm one of the votes for never leave it at home, but I must clarify. I picked up a small Fuji F20, and wear it in a pouch on my belt just about all the time now.
I did this because packing a camera bag every where I go isn't always practical, but as soon as I left home without it, I would see things that made me say; DANG, I wish I had a camera.
Now if I'm going on a photo specific trip, I'll pack the bag.

iPhone is always with me, and it does a good enough job. Other than that, I don't carry anything unless I specifically am going out to shoot. I do have my eye on an LX3 to keep in my laptop bag, though.

Camera phones aside, I always carry a 5mpx point & shoot that's the size of a pack of cigarettes. I rarely use it, but at that size, there's no reason not to keep it in my manpurse.

If nothing else, I use it to document locations or scenes that I may want to return to and re-photograph at a later date.

Plus, ya never know when that alien spaceship is going to land next to you, or Bigfoot is gonna come strolling out of the woods. Hey, if I'm gonna get probed, at least I'll be able to make some $$$ off of the photos...

    Always but graduated response

I have one picture-taking machine with me at all times. The quality of the thing is inversely proportional to the amount of time I spend with it. From best quality to worst quality:

    1. D300/D200 for serious shoots where I know what I'm going to be doing
    2. D60 for picture-rich occasions like holidays or going to an exhibition
    3. Fuji F40 point-and-shoot for most non-work time. Usually accompanies me for dancing outings so I can do videos
    4. HTC Touch Diamond Smartphone with 3Mpix camera. It's really a rotten camera but at least I have it on my belt

For me it is how many cameras there are with me at a given time. Close in a vehicle at least, and rarely am I without one on my person. That is over and above the cell phone whose camera I've used perhaps half a dozen times.

I'll carry a P/S (still film on the right days) or digital ranging from 4MP to 12MP and there's at least one DSLR in the car.

    Yes, I always carry

I was in a carpark yesterday, when I photographed a driver passing by who looked as though he was having the happiest day of his life.

Some spontaneous images are classic examples of why it pays to carry a camera often.

I only take my camera out on specific days, b-day party, family gathering and so on. I use to carry my Canon S1 IS in my backpack all the time. Which reminds me, I have to put it back into my backpack. I also have my blackberry on me all the time but that really doesn't count.

    Great capture Wild Wassa!

Thanks for taking the time to answer everyone. Now I see how some of you just seem to "catch" great moments. I need to have my camera with me more!

My appologies for the implied content, but here is another example of why it's good to try and have a camera handy. :blush2:
I was walking through a friends junk yard with an old 2 mp Nikon Coolpix 2100 when this cat jumped into the water closet and struck the appropriate pose for the situation.
There were only fleeting seconds before the cat sprang back out.
Does this look like a well trained cat?
A little dark, I know, but there was no time for any try for improved exposure with flash.

Re: How often do you have your camera with you? (take #2)

Gracie, Thankyou. I'm glad that you like the shot.

In your survey I voted for not leaving home without it ... now I feel like a total fraud.

When I was leaving home today, I packed up the camera and got it ready, checked that the card had been replaced and thought, well today I won't have a chance to even think about photography, I'll work until dark so there is no point taking the camera, ... I left the camera at home. Maybe the 3rd time in the last decade that I've done that. I even take my camera to the dentist.

I felt guilty leaving the house without it. Today I was finishing a boat for two of my friends for their Flying Fifteen World Championships campaign. My Skipper and I have our boat ready to go, so I was working on my friends Tom Ruut and Glen Sealey's boat.

I was finished about 5 o'clock this evening and Glen who is a naval architect invited me to his boat shop to see two new boats being built, that are almost finished. Both unique high performance boats prior to painting both one off's here in Australia. Glen being my friend, knows how much photography I do, because he always sees me with my camera and he sends me emails about his new boat designs.

Tom, Glen, my Skipper Leigh and I are going to Melbourne for a month, in a couple of days, and the new boats will have changed markedly by the time we return.

The two new boats being built, would have gone up like sky rockets on the 4th of July, on a couple of boat sites this evening. I really blew it today. Next time the boats are seen they will be close to finished and well into their refinishing stages and all of the fine detailed craftsmanship that I saw this evening, not at all evident.

    Warren.

I voted specific outings...which has what it has dwindled to. Although I'm hoping to do more shooting for fun next year.
