    Real grunge tone mapping



    Now this is real grunge tone mapping. And while I realize there is a lot to dislike about HDR and tone mapping, this shot is a billion times more satisfying to me that the snapshot it would have been without tone mapping. It is still a snapshot, but one I can look at a lot.

    Grunge seems to be the going term for pushing HDR to the hyper extreme.

    I wanna see the original, because this is just waaaay over cooked, you need to lose some of the noise in it and the clouds on the left are very distracting.................

    Grunge...............??

    I may try to track the original down, but one thing I like about grunge tone mapping is the ability to pull color and texture out of rock that are there but that your eyes do not pick out very well. This is where tone mapping gets very unnatural looking but to me beautiful if the color and texture are what you are looking at rather than the image as a photographic artifact. Here is a shot of a very bland stone wall on the castle at Nagoya. I love the colors and textures:
