Thanks for the "heads-up"... Not sure where I'll be yet this weekend, but weather permitting, I'll be taking a look... Forecast is for wet weather around here, so it might be a bust this time around..

The weather doesn't look promising for us either, but if I can see stars, I will set up my camera's and try to capture some meteors.

    This Year Looks Promising

    From Spaceweather.com:

HOW STRONG WILL THE GEMINIDS BECOME? Long ago, on a cold December night in the 19th century, the first Geminid meteors appeared. In those days, the display was so weak (a dozen or so meteors per hour) that only the most alert observers could say they had seen a Geminid. How times have changed. According to data compiled by Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office, the Geminid meteor shower has intensified almost five-fold to become one of the best showers of the year:

What's driving the surge? The source of the Geminids is extinct comet 3200 Phaethon. A stream of debris from the comet has been sweeping across Earth's orbit for more than a century, and we are plunging deeper into the stream with each December crossing. Computer models suggest that the Geminids will continue to intensify with meteor rates jumping another 20% to 50% in the decades ahead.

Researchers will be watching the 2009 Geminids to see if the trend does indeed continue. Rates could exceed 140 meteors per hour when the shower peaks on Dec. 13th and 14th. Get the full story and observing tips from Science@NASA.

    Angry I Got Skunked

    Clouds and rain all weekend!

    :-(

Did anyone else have any luck? From what I've read, it was an outstanding display.

    Re: Geminid Meteor Shower

Missed the dates - have to keep a better watch on things - but even so, it has been overcast and absolutely freezing cold here for the past week - we set a new, low record of
    - 39.6° C last night (Dec 13/09) that beat one that was 163 years old. Our sister city to the north was the coldest place in the world on Saturday night (Dec 12/09) at - 40° C plus, er minus something (low temp). Needless to say we will not be out watching for meteorites in this part of the Great White North. Nevertheless, we have been promised +5° C for a high, by Thursday. Happily (for us) this weather is now on its way to Eastern Canada and probably parts of the Northern US. Good luck!!

    WesternGuy.

P.S. FYI, - 40° C and - 40° F are the same. It is where the two scales cross.

That large cold front messed the Geminds up for a lot of folks. I was really looking forward to seeing it this year. And from all accounts, it was a great show.
