I love zoos, you can get close enough to the birds, and they have no where else to go! Have no idea what kind of birds they are though.

I usually start at +1.3 ev on birds with the sky as BG, then find the right comp for the sceen from there .

I guess you could always do one of the photoshop tricks like expose for the bird and expose for the sky.... them merge ;)

    NOT MY DEAL THOUGH

Well I am going to have to check on that one cuz it seems right to me, but that bird was part of a small flock in an african rift exhibit. But you really do seem to have nailed it.

I take that back. You are obviously right. I am going to have to call the zoo and ask why they would put a south american bird in an african aviary.

You know, I spotted my first black-crowned night heron not long ago, and this doesn't look like it at all. My Audubon book shows a different bird, one without a white stripe across the eyes. Is this one a female/juvenile? Also, I can't seem to find this bird in the book...

    OOPS....

This shift change has made my brain think YELLOW and my hands type BLACK

It is infact a YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHTHERON in adult plumage. I see atleast a dozen every year, with a few rare black-crowned sitings in a few spots where they nest.

Mike these are infact "winter range " birds, but commom mergansers do infact nest in northern NJ somewhat fequently( can be expected, but hard to find )

These are this years young too ;)

Here's one for you to ID, Paul. A common bird to so. Cal but somewhat of a tricky angle. The stripe behind the eye should help you.

From the looks of it is infact not the more commom chipping sparrow, but a juvenile white crowned sparrow , but you are right... THIS is a very HARD image to ID. I assure you if you gave this image to 8 EXPERTS, not all would agree ;)

It looks house sparrow in nature, but the eye stripe is to defined

This is getting to be a long thread, but here's another bird to make it longer. I shot this one also saturday evening 7/30, these little yellow warbler birds give me the hardest time IDing.

OH this is a great bird to study!! YOUNG prairie warblers look VERY close to this and are common in NJ as breeders :) Right now the first wave of northern migrants is just starting to arrive.

What you have here is a first winter MAGNOLIA warbler !!!

WHITE under tail coverts with a black tip to the tail ;)
