    He's actually posting pictures?

'Bout time, eh? My wife and I drove a ways down the Great River Road recently, which follows the Mississippi. This was southern Wisconsin and a really nice drive, including a ferry ride and a pretty unusual store. This was a quick trip so I didn't try to get out for early or late light, and this is my first go with processing images in Nikon Capture NX which I really like but will need to spend some time with it to get comfortable. And it was hard to see the Coolpix's LCD in the daylig... oh, enough with the excuses already!

Hey Steve. Is that the Cassville Ferry? That store image brings new meaning to the phrase "Treat every hunter as if he was loaded". Was that store near a trailer park by any chance?

Great to see some image from you!! I don't believe that store would be legal in most states. That is one unique place. Did they have a special table featuring dynamite?
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

    There's a similar ferry in eastern wa...basically a tug pushing a barge.
    That store is scary.
I wouldn't pass up that first shot just because the light was bad either.

    Re: He's actually posting pictures?

Thanks for the comments! That is the Cassville ferry, crossing from the small Wisconsin town to an Iowa cornfield with a two mile long, single lane gravel road. There were only three cars on the ferry but it could probably fit a dozen, and the tow boat attaches to it with a hinge. That way they don't have to turn the whole thing around, pretty good idea.

The store was in downtown Prairie du Chein and a bit of a surprise! Just outside the frame to the left is a cooler with beer, cheese and sausage - plus they also sold bait and fishing gear. One stop shopping! Across the street was a small stand selling one of the best hamburgers I've ever had and it was worth the 20 minute wait (and was also worth the wait to about 30 other people). Good enough for them to have been around 98 years, too!

    Re: He's actually posting pictures?

I thought that was a WI store....given the season, they all look like that.

It's deer season people. A time to get wasted and shoot at things! You leave city limits, and that's any gas station/convienence store in the state.

    eta...nice photos!

    That first shot is beautiful!

Did the store have any good package sales?

Alton Brown from the food network recently travelled the whole River Road - south to north- of course his trip was about food - not so much photography (although he did travel with a photographer)

Did you get any good eats on the road?

    thanks,
    Wes

Feasting on Asphalt? I've seen a few parts of it and it could be a great long trip. Good eats - hmm... The aforementioned hamburger was really outstanding, cooked on a flat top grill with tons of onions. It was the onions on the grill that I smelled from two blocks away that drew me in - and worth the wait.

I used to spend a lot of time around the Dubuque IA area of the river as a kid and hadn't been back there since, other than just passing through. That area has really changed and since we couldn't get into our first restaurant choice we'll probably head back there again soon.

    Thanks again for the comments!

Next time you're in the Dubuque area, you should go to the Mississippi River Museum. I have been there twice, and will go back again and again. Not a huge place, but very cool if you like the river and aquariums.

Ah, if they had liquor and guns "one stop shopping" in these here parts, I'd probably be in prison by now...
