    More Shots From The D200

More from my first batch of 80+ photo's. I finally got around to resizing a few more.

First three shots are of my oldest daughter.
    #1 Relaxing at home.
#2 In the school play "Our Town".
    #3 Before the Junior/Senoir Prom.
#4 Thunder. Thunder is about eight months old now. When we had him fixed at seven months, he weighed 91 pounds. Someone told us he is a Shepard/Mastiff mix. How about it Paul, does he look like he's got some Mastiff in him?

Re: More Shots From The D200

I'm partial to the dog shot, but to be a little picky, I should point out a white balance problem in the two middle shots. If you check around here you will find that most will tell you that auto white balance does not work very well on digital cameras. You often have to manually set it,...even for shade like in the middle shot which is too blue. I ran into similar problems at one point, which is why I am now more careful in manually setting white balance.

She's good lookin Speed! Of course we know where she gets it (see D200 post #1 ) and now we all know why you have a large gun cabinet

I am glad to see you using that machine my friend. White balance issues, whatever. I have yet to take the perfect shot myself. The point is you're the Master Nikon Samurai!

Hehehe. Yes, the colors came out better on that one. These were from my first batch of shots. I'm playing with my white balance now, and figuring out what works and what doesn't.

    Thanks for the comments.

White balance issues indeed! Film is definitely simplier!!!

I'm playing around with my white balance settings now, taking shots on auto and then on sun/shade/incandesent/fluorencent/cloudy/whatever the light source. I think I'm getting a handle on it, but it's going to take practice, practice, and more practice. Hmmm, doesn't that mean I've got to get out and shoot? A lot?

    ;-)

Thanks for the comments my friend!

    Speed,

Are you shooting RAW (NEF)? If so, you can correct the white-balance in PP.

Did you get Nikon Capture? If not, I recommend it if you are shooting RAW. It will automatically apply your in-camera settings (white-balance, tone curve, sharpening, exposure, etc.), but you can change those without loss of image information if you don't like the outcome.

For me, I have a D70. I shoot with Auto-White Balance (-1) 85% of the time. I probably tweak the WB 20% of the time in PP if the shot is important.

    Good luck,
    Tim

    Hey Tim,

I'm shooting in JPG right now. I only have a 512 MB Compact Flash card (though I'm planning on getting a 2 GB one soon). Also, the only photo-processing program I have is Photoshop Elements 2.0, which it is my understanding, does not support RAW files. I understand that Elements 3.0 and 4.0 do support working in RAW.

I've read good things about Nikon Capture, so I'll probably download the trial version and try it after I get the larger CF card.

Right now I'm playing with the various WB presets, and finding which ones work. (I'll post what I've come up with here shortly.) Once I get a handle on those, then I'm going to start playing with color temps. I'm seeing a white card in my future as well.

Thanks for the comments and the support my friend.

    Hey Speed,

You know that you can manually set the white-balance. Just find a "white" wall or any other color neutral surface (an 18% grey card is ideal). Read up on it in your manual. It's quite easy.

    Cheers,
    Tim

p.s. Sorry for harping about this…

Re: Are you shooting RAW (NEF)?

    Speed,

I would suggest continuing in JPG until you learn more about the camera, etc., only because RAW is another learning experience and takes a bit of time. I like shooting in JPG actually and get some great results with Elements2. I do very little processing, because like you, I don't like sitting at the computer. I'd much rather shoot.

Speed, I would strongly suggest posting some of your images on the Critique Forum only because people over there are looking to help you improve your images, have a lot of experience with digital - and are viewing the images just to help people out. You'll be surprised how much help you'll get. I'm saying this because I've learned just about everything I know about digital over there - and I learned quickly. Sometimes advice can be more helpful than the manual - the two go together. You know, show & tell.

AND I'm not saying stop posting here - please! But just suggesting you might post a few over there too - just to give it a "shot" pardon the pun.

    Just a thought.

    Liz

Yeah , that dog has mastiff TYPE in it's lineage. Could be bullmastiff/english mastiff, rotty, or any other mastiff type(leonberger) and shepard seems far fetched to me ;)

Dude my neo wasn't that big at that age..... he weighed 168 pounds at 3 yrs too!!!!!

Re: More Shots From The D200

Nice shots. AWB on my D200 is very good, but in some situations both it and my D2HS need help. When shooting indoors with incandescent light I typically do Kelvin WB or use the incandescent preset. Some shade/fading light conditions cause AWB to go a bit finnicky, so I switch to K or the appropriate preset WB with fine tuning.
