New Lens!

Well it's not new it's used, but new to me. I just got a Nikkor 300 mm f4 ED from KEH. It's one of the older style lenses, but so far I'm very pleased. I pulled it out of the box and slapped it on the D200 and focused on the first thing I saw (a flowering plant in my office). Later I went out to the ball field where a practice was under way and slipped a 1.4 Kenko extender on the 300mm for the second shot. From the early results I think I'm going to be pleased.

Nice shots Larry. It looks like the old style is much sharper than the 300 f/4 that I owned that was AF-S.

Congratulations Larry! Great shots! I love the 2nd one, the position of the subject and the blur on the ball is perfect. It's a classic - like a Norman Rockwell (painting).

Thanks for the comments everyone. I hope to give this lens a much more complete test run later in the week. I am very hopeful it will fill a gap for me when it comes to outdoor sports and from the look of things may even work out for some flower pics.

I always wanted one of those, although I would really wanted the f/2.8 version but the f/4 version is nearly as good.

Yeah me too Brian!! However the f4 used was a savings of over $3700. A very big reason I went with the older version f4 used.

I'm not one to get attached to gear, but the manual focus version of this lens (also with the ED glass) is the only piece of gear that I ever regret selling. Amazingly sharp and all that other good stuff. You'll love it!

I do think I will have a long relationship with this lens. It is something of a retro lens Steve only with the AF. I may not be as fast to focus of some of the newer lenses but it is sharp.
