    Sunrise over Fermilab

I spent the night in the LHC Remote Operations Center and then saw this from the rooftop to "top" it all off... Ha. Get it? Eh, OK...

Now off to work for another nine hours.

How to tell the most experienced shooter in a group? They have the least amount of toys on them.

Glad you weren't sucked up by a black hole because then we wouldn't get to see these lovely sunrise shots.

Very nice, didn't know they had a remote control room for the CERN LHC.
Makes sense considering that they built superconducting agents for the ring.
Don't suppose you ran into Bill Higgins?

Beautiful Shots! The 2nd one is stunning. However the dialog sounds a lot like Charlie Brown's teacher to me

    Re: Sunrise over Fermilab

    Paul,

There is a control room for the LHC at CERN of course, but Fermilab's is there as a redundancy to have another set of eyes on the CMS portion of the experiments that are being conducted. Fermilab's control room pretty much only has read-only rights to the data, even though it gets stored and analyzed in other areas of the lab. Superconducting has nothing to do with the proximity of the control rooms to the actual ring.

I think you might enjoy this, a real-time visualization of the interconnect between CERN and the U.S.

    Re: Sunrise over Fermilab

Ive been to that preserve tons of times as a kid. Wish I had the time to go back.

I think I went mountain biking over the place they buried the first nuclear pile.

Great shots btw, I didnt know they monitored the LHC from Fermi.

    Thanks Brad!

    Atomic,

The nuclear pile is actually at a different location. Fermilab, though open to the public, is not considered a preserve.

The Chicago Tribune ran two shots in their Metro section as well. The Pajama Party was a blast and really showed how much fun these people are. One guy, wearing a bathrobe, had a towel hanging over his shoulder. "Is that a Douglas Adams reference?" I asked. "Yes it is. I'm glad it wasn't wasted." He responded. That pretty much made my night.

    Paul,

I didn't run into Bill Higgins (don't know him, so wasn't looking for him) but I'm sure we rubbed elbows at some point. He blogged about it all here: http://beamjockey.livejournal.com/99976.html
