Grab Shot

Hey Paul,

As far as the noise goes, shoot at ISO 100 whenever possible. The first lightning shots were shot at ISO 100 and I didn't notice any objectionable noise. With these, I didn't think to check the ISO, and when I checked, I saw that I had shot them at ISO 400. It should also be noted that I had my Noise Reduction on "Normal". Next time I'm going to put it on "High" and see if that helps reduce the noise as well.

Ironically, I've shot indoor shots without flash at ISO 800 and 1000, and the noise wasn't as bad as it is in these. Go figure.

I will definitely stay away from that spot behind the trees whenever there's a storm brewing, but I gotta admit, I'm curious to see what's out there that draws the lightning.

I'm still playing with White Balance, noise reduction, and I recently discovered that the D200 has two JPG settings - "Size Priority" where the files are compressed to about the same file size, and and "Optimal Quality" which is supposed to have less compression and better image quality. So far both settings give me image files between 3.5 and 4.5 megs. The only difference I've seen is that my frame counter went from 335 to 224. Like I said, I'm still learning!

From all I've seen, the D70 (and D70s) both handle noise quite well. And both handle it better than the D100 which is what I shoot. Don't be afraid to play with your gear. All it's gonna cost you is your time.

Yes, my wife is indeed a G.R.I.T.S., and she is called the "Queen of Pain" in the dojo, and we both test for black belt on Saturday. So yes, the potential is there to be injured. But worry not my friend, I can assure you that any "grab shots" will be consential. :-D

Now if someone else were to grab her, first I'd smile, then I might feel sorry for them (but probably not!)

I followed your D200 announcement as I was considering buying the D70s. Your excitement spread a little and probably contributed to the timing of my purchase. Which, I should probably thank you for. The day after I bought it for a killer price, the price went up by about $100. I haven't seen such a good deal since then.

As far as noise goes, I've recently discovered how well the D70s does at high ISO settings, relative to my limited experience with high ISO film. One thing I'm still not clear on is how digital does with long exposures; reciprocity. Don't worry. I'll find out for myself. :) I just can't help but get eager and ask the question first, since I only have a fraction of the time I wish I had to experiment. Thanks for humoring me.

All in all, I have to agree... digital is grand. It's like a weight has been lifted. All those things I wanted to try, but didn't for fear of "wasting" film, I can try now with only my time to loose. It's great! Bring on the lightening and fireworks! :D
