Good Bye Old Friend

This was a tough day as my dog Casper died during the night. I have had Casper since August of 1997 after taking him from someone who abused him. He was a fantastic dog and loved playing with the kids in the area.

What a heartfelt goodbye. I'm sure we're all feeling it right now. To take him from an abusive home is a saintly act, you are to be commended. If you believe as I do, you may be consoled by the fact that he is happy in doggy heaven.

I have nothing but sheer respect for people who save animals from abusive conditions and take them upon their own. Sorry to hear that he his gone and my condolences as well.

Well, it's never easy. Had to say goodbye to a few canines over the years. I bet that if you take a tour of a shelter today , you won't be going home alone. A great way to honour your old friend also.

Sorry for your news, John. I know it's a very hard thing to take, but you made most of his life so much better by giving him the home he deserves.

I guess I have to agree with Peter a little bit. Another dog might be just the thing, could give another deserving dog a good home and like Greg said, would be a great way to honor Casper.

Casper was part Lab and part Rotwieler. Unfortunately he developed tumors that are common in Rottties and that is what caused his death.
Two weeks ago my niece gave me a 13 week old Rottie puppy (the thread was New Family Member). She is a handfull!

Casper was the best dog, he'd sleep on the bed and rest his head on my shoulder (not the bad one), or he'd cuddle up with Hermy the cat.

Boy do I know how you feel! I lost my last rescued dog(I get the XXL ones nobody wants) 3 years ago. I still have pictures in my wallet of him and the previous mastiff and 2 people images ;)

When my last died, I felt like crap for a month!

One that is a great photo of a better friend. I am sorry for your loss. A dog is such a great family member. Thank you for rescuing him too...he looks too beautiful to be abused.

It is always sad and hard to lose a friend like this, particularly a big dog. Seems like they leave a large hole...

It's been over a year since a I lost my last Rott, but I still miss her. There are always plenty to rescue.

Dear John,

I'm so sorry about your friend, Casper. Words seem so shallow at times like this, but we all feel your loss, and many of us can relate to the love we have for our (pets). We have 2 cats here - and we're all attached to them. I don't even want to think about how we would feel if something happened to them.

I'm happy you have another puppy, which will be some consolation, but it doesn't take away the pain of loss.

Thanks again everyone. The photo below of Casper is one of the very last photos I took of him, if not the last. He loved the snow! Somewhere I have a shot of him where all you see is a big white field of deep snow and a nose sticking up out of it
Tonight I had a big old fire out back in the fire pit. It seems the puppy doesn't like fires, she headed straight for the door. Casper would have laid down on the ground next to me and watched the fire, and not budge for hours. When the flames would die down he'd whine until I added more wood!

First, I am so sorry for the loss, JS. I know all too well how that feels. I am so thankful that you rescued Casper from a bad home. I have a lot of respect for folks like that. I am glad that you were able to get Cassie before the ol' boy passed on.

I know that Cassie might be a little scared of the fire right now, but you have to remember you now have a kid to work with instead of an adult. ;) Give her time and I bet as she grows older, she will be right out there with you some night.

Yeah, I know, I guess Casper never had the fear of the fire at all, even when he was 8 weeks old he'd lay down and watch it.....it was the only way to keep him still back then
Cassie did great at the vets today, never making a sound when she got her shot....good sign there!
