Fashion Photo Class 5 weeks in

To keep myself amused and learning this summer I enrolled in a Fashion Photography class at UNLV. Although the instruction part and classroom/studio leave a little to be desired -- the access to models has be fantastic. All of the models and make-up artists are volunteering time for CDs (TFCD) and have been fun to work and learn with. We've had several location shots -- and since it's Las Vegas in the the summer, they've been Bikini shoots. Oh well, I guess we all just have to endure some things in life.

Since the studio we are using is a poorly laid out classroom in the fashion design department, we've been forced outside around the old converted elementary school grounds with all the buildings painted a sickly yellow beige. But, it gives us to try to make something from nothing!

Here are a few shots from out last classroom session (next week we shoot a fashion show at Planet Hollywood Casino).

This is Jennifer J -- a local model and host:

This is Jennifer L -- its a little sad when the most colorful item around is the danger sign:

This is Nicole S -- she is actually a make-up artist and just wanted some fun shots for her book:

In this last shot we were trying to catch the last of the sunset light and playing up the Charlie's Angels bit. There are two shots in this sequence that go together but I'll only post this one:

I have a few more shots on my portraits page of my website. I definitely think I have progressed this summer as a photographer -- but still need more practice with models and lighting.

EDIT: what am I doing wrong -- that my photos don't pop in???

First of all, you're lucky to have this kind of class available to you. If nothing else, you'll learn what not to do, saving you much time (and maybe money) later should you decide to make a go of this as a career.

As for the photos, let's just say you seem to be making the most of what you have to work with...

Based on my experience, the biggest leap in the quality and style of a fashion photograher's work comes when you finally have access to great modeling and styling talent. Unfortunately, you haven't experienced that quite yet.

Not a knock. Just an observation...

Your shots look pretty good. I guess my only pieve is the fence. There oughta be a LAW against using chain-link fences in fashion shots. That and brick walls, heh heh...

Again, nothing to do with you. Just my little rant. Can't wait to see the casino shots...

BTW, the shot on your site of the girl in the water is real nice...

I don't think I would know what to do with a real studio or location shoot. And props -- yikes. It has been a fun class -- would have been cooler with a real studio setting though -- or at least on the main campus with trees and some interesting architecture to use as backdrops.

Yeah, I hear you. You just have to take things a little bit at a time, and always evaluate your shots, and figure out what adjustments you need to make next time.

You know, I just re-read your first post, and realize that you'll be shooting a fashion show in the casino. I thought you were going to be doing a fashion shoot. Too bad.

Shooting runway is an entirely different animal, presenting its own unique challenges. More like shooting a sporting event, heh heh. Good luck with that...
