Ever waste a day?
Yesterday was a beautiful day, so early AM & late afternoon I went to 3 parks here on Long Island to take pictures. Hiked through the woods, got bit by several wimpy mosquitos(By the next day the itch was gone), walked around for hours with soaken wet feet from the wet ground and spent over 3 hours taking pictures.
But then when I looked at them - how disappointing! It seems like I wasted the day(and in-between I watched my Eagles embarass themselves by blowing a big lead to the Giants).
Either the focus wasn't right, or the exposure wasn't what I thought it was, the composition was wrong - didn't see in the final pic what I thought i was taking a pic of, some distracting object would find its way into a pic that I hadn't seen - one of those really rotten days of shooting. I think in all that time I ended up with one shot(maybe 2?) that I am not totally ashamed to show people.
"Mama Said There'd Be Days Like This!"

We all started out the same way. Good you tried and even better that you'll be trying it again soon.

That sentence alone sounds great to me! Far from being wasted.
Wasting would be sitting inside watching TV all day :p

Re: Ever waste a day?
I agree with Loupey. As stated in a previous post on this board, if you got out and saw something you don't see everyday, learned anything at all, and experienced the beauty of your world, it was not a waste.
Nature photography is different, perhaps not the fundamentals, but there are so many things you can't control, the best you can do is research, get on location, and hope for the best. And, as stated before, do it because you love nature, not just to get the shot, and you'll always feel fulfilled when you come home.

Re: Ever waste a day?
No day is ever wasted...I used to waste alot of film...When I had rotten picture days such as yours.I have learned that sometimes out of the blue you see something, it just takes your breath away... that is the time to be ready. So here is the chance to fine tune the camera, be prepared. :O) Nothing lost nothing gained.
I like both of these. The Surf pic. is my fav. :O)

Re: Ever waste a day?
No - the DAY really wasn't wasted (But it was a more eye catching headline than "I took a bunch of Lousy Pictures!). It really was a GREAT day to be outdoors. And in taking bad pictures, I keep learning more about the camera - there 's alot of trial and error for quite a long time with a new camera - esp with a first SLR. So I did get alot out of the shooting.
Speaking of being "ready", doesn't it bug you when that perfect shot presents itself BUT YOU DON'T HAVE YOUR CAMERA? GRRRR!!! Therefore, my camera now lives in my car.
And Rick - thanks for the comments on the photos - The bird is my fav. I wish I had a slightly sharper focus on the bird, but I really love the way the background turned out without any manipulation. I think the surfer may need a little PS work on it.
BTW - those "wimpy" mosquitos that I referred to that had stopped itching by the next day - I TAKE IT BACK!!!!!! I am swollen & itching from those darned things now! AAAARGH!!!!!!!
