Hi all, I need some help!

Hi, I'm not too into photography, and the only stuff I know about it I got from taking photography senior year in high school, and researching cameras the past few days. But my girlfriend is way into it, and I want to get her a camera for her upcoming birthday to replace the AE-1 that was stolen a few months ago. I want to get her either another AE-1 or maybe an upgrade that can use the macro lense she still has.

As I understand it, there are two cameras that are similar and might be able to use the lense. The A1 and the F1. Now, I know that the F1 is the "real deal" SLR manual, but it is sort of pricy and hard to find. So I was thinking an A1. Now, first of all, is an A1 better than an AE-1? And can it use the same lense? For that matter, can an F1 use an AE-1 lense? (just in case I find one for a good price). Also, should I get one that has a 1.4 or a 1.8 lense on it already? What is the difference between and AE-1 and an AE-1 Program? And what are fair prices for these cameras in good condition?

I've been looking on ebay, even though I don't like how ify auctions are. Unfortunately there arent any camera stores that sell old slrs around me. I know these are a lot of questions, but any help you guys can give me would be great. Thanks!

    Welcome Carlton.
I'm afraid that the advice I have for you isn't an answer to one of your questions. I think that anyone who is 'way into' photograhy would want to be making her own decisions about equipment. I know that takes some of the fun out of a present but most photographers I know would feel this way.
To get some idea of used prices you could look in the Classifieds section of this site.
For a birthday present you could take her to dinner in NYC and waltz her into one of the big camera stores there as a surprise and let her do her own picking and choosing.

well, i did do some recon before hand

I do know that she wants either another AE-1 or a better manual SLR that would work the the lense that she still has, that's why I narrowed it down to the A1 and F1. So at first I was just looking for AE-1's, but through the research I did, it seemed like the A1 and F1 are better cameras that could possibly work with her macro lense. That was one of the things that I am trying to verify. Unfortunately she lives in Phoenix, so a trip to NYC is sort of out.
