B.C. or New Mexico for vacation in May?
My wife and I are thinking about taking a vacation in late April or May, and two places we've always wanted to check out are British Columbia and New Mexico (Santa Fe/Taos mainly). I don't think we'll put this off until the fall even though it might be best at both places.
Having never been near either place before, we're wondering if there's a bad time to visit either of these places. I say this because the events calendar for most of New Mexico has almost nothing going on in the spring, but a lot in the other seasons (mainly fall). And I think I remember hearing about a rainy season in BC. It won't be a photo-specific trip so I'm not specifically worried about that (but will be shooting a lot too of course).
I'm leaning towards BC at the moment and "just happen to find" a sea kayaking outfitter but don't tell her. :rolleyes:

I'd say BC.....not like I'm biased or anything:rolleyes::D

New Mexico in May,
It should be a good time to go. The lawernce of arrabia dust storms *should* have subsided by then. and the Fire restrictions/closers *should* not have started.
Everything should still be rather green. and the temps moderate, although it's never really hot in Nothern NM. If we're lucky, there will still be some white caps in the north facing avalanche shoots in the Taos Area.
I feel I should do my duty for the NM tourism board....go to BC......NM sucks.
(I'll be back there the first week of May for a SW MTB trip)

Re: B.C. or New Mexico for vacation in May?
I really cannot advise you to visit BC in April or May! These are infamous months known for their rainy-ness. Even June can be particularly wet. Another factor you might want to take into account is the rather limited amount of daylight during spring. As far as I am concerned, darkness and rain can really spoil my holidays. Be prepared to be cold and wet EVERY day (worst case).
HOWEVER: in the last couple of years, May has been particularly dry and sunny. Global warming?!
As far as 'what to do in BC', I am sure you will find enough to entertain you for your whole trip. Sea kayaking, hiking, beach combing, forest walks, etc.... Ski slopes have been known to still be opened in Whistler in early May....
If your wife is more museum or sun-bathing oriented, you might have a serious problem on your hands :D!
In any case, if you select BC for your holidays destination, the best advise I can give you is to flight to Seattle, take a rental car and spend 2-3 days in Olympic Nat. Park before heading towards BC. You will not regret it! It's breathtaking!
Hope this helps!
Cheers,
Steph.
