I went to explore Berlin for a few days last month. As usual for a first trip to a place I took low residual value gear - my Nikon D200 + 18-200. It was really a pleasure to rediscover a fairly simple DSLR (only 11 autofocus points). Plus I had a few surprises:
1. My hotel room key. I was staying at a "fashion" hotel. It was very nice but a bit unusual
2. The city center is fairly empty and criss-crossed by railway lines. But just a minute - doesn't the front of the train look a little fuzzy? Yes, my 18-200 all the way out at 200mm is not very sharp on the left hand side. (This crossed my mind when I read N8's piece on the new 18-300 in the Nikon forum)
3. Atomic bomb shelter at 3200 ISO. Much less noise than I was expecting. I suspect that Lightroom 4 has improved the look of the D200 RAW files
4. East Side Gallery (the side you can't see from the road). This is the longest remaining part of the Berlin Wall, which has been turned into an art gallery.
5. The memorial to the German resistance to Hitler. Complete silence and horror. I warmed up the colours when I treated it but I might put back the original blue cast.
