    I like portraits :)

Just felt like sharing this one. I was trying to shoot one with artificial light for a photo project using one of my roommates as a subject, so this is from the test and set-up shot. Lit with one light at about 45 degrees and a foot or two up, bounced into silver umbrella, reflector camera right.

I kinda like this shot. Very nice for one light. I know this ain't critique but the only thing I would have done different is frame it to where the top of the head is cropped off and the hand holding the pipe is not. Other than that, well done.

Well, if the photo project was for a class, then as a former media teacher among my other careers, I would mark you down for missing one of the basics in lighting. No part of the subject including hair and clothes in this case should ever blend into the background because of poor lighting or underexposure.

Brent, I like this portrait! My only possible nit is i'm not sure how dark you intended this to look. I like the dark look, but I notice you're a mac dude like me. How is your display calibrated- for 1.8 gamma like apple standard, or 2.2 like PCs? I use 2.2 since that's what most people are going to see on the web or when I share photos. switching to 1.8, it has a decidedly different feel, a bit more open, maybe a bit more overall pop, but not as contrasty and the eyes don't have the same effect.

Ronnoco, there's such a thing as artistic intent. Maybe you've heard of it. It means you don't need to follow every rule, every time, if it serves you artistically.

Good shot Brent. You could try a lighter background for seperation, or use a hair light if you had one available. Heck, some one holding a white hunk of posterboard as a reflector might have helped a little.

    Good job.
