Define cheap. I've gotten my gear from alienbees.com and been very happy with it,.

Depends on what you're looking for. I started off using some Interfit 500w continuous lights, then I bought a couple Nikon flashes to use as strobes (Got tired of using my tripod for all inside shots).

After using my flashes, I bought a couple Interfit Stellar 300w strobes (One at a time, I'm up to 3 now).

My advice would be to get one light (either strobe or continuous) and a reflector, and as you get good at that setup, add a second light, then a third light.
