    need help choosing a flash

Hello all, this is my first post to this forum. Thanks for the resource.

I am building a custom photo booth that's run by a computer and an unorthadox camera setup. The camera is a network attached cam (1280x960) that's controlled by a computer.

We were experimenting with computer controlled constant lighting (turn on, take photos, turn off) but would like to try using an actual flash. I need to find a flash that meets these requirements:

    1. Able to plug it in instead of using batteries.
    2. Able to be computer controlled using a rs-232 (serial) cable, VISCA (like mini din rs-232), USB, or whatever.
    3. Controll flash intensity and other properties.

    Could you make some suggestions?

    Thanks!
    -Rob

OK, forget the rs-232 thing.... I can build something else to interface with the flash using the standard camera connection, whatever that may be.

Here is a link to the AlienBees flash units, by Paul C. Buff.
    http://www.alienbees.com/flash.html
These units have a reputation for being very reliable and accurate. Also, not very expensive. Their power output is adjustable within a 5 stop range and also have modeling lamps (constant light to allow viewing the effect of the lighting placement first)
As for connecting to a computer to fire them, they utilize a PC sync cable but I think if you contact the website you may be able to figure out some solutions or adaptations.
