Need to find a very compact light stand

I've been looking, but I can't find anything as small as I'm looking for. It needs to fold down to no more than 12" in length, and if it only extended to about 2' I'd be happy. This is something that needs to be able to fit into my pack for use with while riding my mtn bike. I've been using the Ultrapods which work great except when I need to get my flash higher in the air for shooting big gap jumps.

Why not look at buying an inexpensive stand and cutting the parts down? I would probably work.

Re: Need to find a very compact light stand

I measured my light stands this morning. I think I could cut one down to an overall length of 14" by cutting the legs, and shortening each section. I am not going to test it , but you might want to look into it. I bought the stands from LS Photo, they are selling 2x 5' maximum height light stands for $35.00. Since the stands I have are max 8', the 5' ones may be easier to modify.

    I hope this helps,

I'm open to suggestions, but I don't see how you could do that. You need the support sections that connect the legs to the bottom of the column. Even if you cut off the bottom of the legs at that point, when you fold it up you still end up with the same overall length. On my stands I could shorten the column and extentions, but I'd still end up with a stand that was 21" long.

Do a search for background light stands, they're out there...

This seems to be EXACTLY what you're looking for:

The first one looks perfect. I can probably even shorten it a little bit which would be nice. I just ordered one from Adorama. Thanks.
