Light output vs. subject matter

Can anyone recommend a chart showing the relationship between light output and subject matter? How much power to photograph a full-length portrait, a group shot (up to ten people) and, say, a still-life on a 3' x 3' tabletop?

Welcome to the site and this forum, garryla. What you're asking for would be quite difficult to find, as different lights from different manufacturers have vastly different power needs and outputs.

Plus, how many lights you use, the positioning of them as well as how you modify them all affect the output.

What pros usually do is rely on a good flash light meter to figure basic exposure and (more importantly) light ratios, then use digital tools (histogram, monitor screen) to fine tune things.

It's not unusual for photogs to compile their own lighting charts as you describe, especially for repetative setups, but they're customized to the way the individual works and the specific equipment they use...
