    Unhappy Halogen Lighting??

I am trying to take portaits of my children. I have set up something temporary in my basement. I am using Halogens work lights, however, their faces have a yellowish tint, they don't seem to be white enough....what am I doing wrong?

    nu_cre8tion,

The answer to your problem is that the wrong "white balance" was set in your camera. White balance affects the way the sensor chip sees light, so that's why you are getting yellowish photos.

Consult the manual that came with your camera to find out how to switch the white balance.

Here are some visual examples of how WB can dramatically alter the image: (I shot these a few minutes ago under low-wattage energy-saver lighting).

    White Balance

Alex's post pretty much answers your question. Different types of light have different color. One of the great things about digital is that it's really easy to change the color the camera captures. With halogen lights I think you're going to want to use the tungsten / incandescent white balance preset. That will look like a little lightbulb. Your camera might also have a custom white balance option. That will give you the absolute best color. Check your camera manual to learn how to set up a custom white balance. Usually you take a picture of something you know is white - like a piece of paper - and then set that image as the custom white balance.

Also if you shot in raw format, you can easily change the white balance in photoshop.

No problem! And welcome to the site. I see you're new and you're in Utah. I'm in SLC and there are a few other Utah folks here. We haven't ever had any kind of meetup, but we should. I hope you stick around and become part of the community. Utah is such a great place for photography and I'd love to get a group of us together for a a little photo get-together sometime
