Does anyone just use photoflood bulbs?

I have always done things the cheap way.
I have 3 of those "clamp-on" style lamp fixtures w/ reflectors and use
100W photofloods. I use this for close-up and some macro shooting.
I avoid using the built in camera flash whenever possible.
Does anyone else use this method of lighting?

Sure. I'd imagine tons of folks do. It's stll the easiest, cheapest, and most obvious way to learn and use lighting.

In fact, with the digital age has come a new wave of using continuous lighting, fueled in part by the availablity of much cheaper, cooler, and more powerful fluorescent fixtures.

It's often been said that photographic lighting is best when it copies what happens naturally. I don't fully agree with that, but I do have to admit it's almost always better (and more exciting) when you can see the effect that your light has on a subject...

Thanks, I have always believed that understanding light and shadow is the key
to the art of photography. All the technical stuff is relatively easy.
I know I'm behind the times, I still use the incandescent photo floods.
Could you recommend a fluorescent for close-up work?
Also, incandescents are often a bit harsh and I have never experimented with diffussing.
Seems like fluorescents would be a little softer!?
