    Girls BBall (ambient)

Though they can't compare with LightBright's unless he forgets the lens cap on...

One of the few high school girls who actually has decent form shooting (a little soft, the defender blocking caught all the focus)

Definitely would rather shoot the guys game.. layup shots allow the rim/backboard to be in view .. I was sitting for all the photos I believe

Awww lol your gonna make me blush. Besides, out of all the shots I took, I only kept a few and dumped most of them. As long as I have one good shot out of 500, Im happy.

I think you did a fantastic job and you don’t even know it. I really like number 3. The lettering behind her head gives some contrast and I actually find it great that she’s behind the other player. My teacher once told me that I should crop tighter. He says you don’t always have to have the whole body in the picture. This does go against how I like to shoot, but this tip saved many pictures that I thought were bad. I think number 3 would get an extra pop if it was cropped tighter. Very nice work. Was it a well lit gym? The images are very clean. Great job!

I couldn't crop #3 any tighter without ruining the 8x10 print size that I upload to photoreflect and my website.. I would have lost some of the player who she climbed as she was fouled. I actually crop tighter on jump shots a lot and crop at the waist to get the individual a lot of the time... the second one just happened to fit better. It helps me keep some that I wouldn't otherwise.

This one I cut off his feet.. (hell, he's 7 foot tall) and maybe should have just deleted with his arm blocking also.. but decided to keep instead

Re-confirming why I like the boys game better.. you can see what they're shooting AT in pictures!

It's sort of well lit.. I think its' 48 sets of the fluorescent bulbs you see in the shots and allows 1/640 at ISO 3200 to get what you see in these pictures.

The colors of the gym walls don't help with WB so I would say these are excellent. Those type lights are being used more often and the ambient shooters I know are happy about that. They don't seem to have the cycling issues that other kinds have and are pretty bright. Even using strobes I appreciate the consistent light since it gives me more room to choose the exposure I want without fighting the lights.

    Re: Girls BBall (ambient)

I was in another gym that had 2 or bulbs burned out in different fixtures and that mad the light change from one 10 foot section to another.. almost as iffy as football field lighting, and the way they are set up created a lot of shadows and what I call 'sweat reflections' off the lights when a player was shooting

    Especially bad in this one

I definitely prefer these lights over the old "yellow" ones of the past since the color stays pretty even. Now if only this weren't Minnesota where some players are pale as their white jerseys!

These kind of venues do drive me crazy, because once I lock in on an exposure I like to switch to manual and fire away. With sure a light variance it's impossible to do.
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

    Re: Girls BBall (ambient)

Tonight I brought the 50D up to 6400 for the FIRST time ever.. I've had the camera exactly a year on Thursday and never used the expanded ISO before.. I'll post a couple in here in a day or two.. it left some 'artifacts' after noise reduction but pretty usable I guess... if I was shooting for a newspaper and not my own website and sales I'd be real happy with what I got.

    Re: Girls BBall (ambient)

OK, so I lied and decided to post a couple tonight.. ISO 6400 so I could get a shutter speed of 1/640.. this gym has a dark floor that reflects very little light to help shoot...cleaned with Neat Image settings around 50% Luminance and Chrominance.. as mentioned there is some slight jpg 'artifact' leftover but I'm happy with how 6400 after some neat image. Some of the pictures might be a little soft but 1/500 I didn't find fast enough earlier in the season.

I had a big advantage with the white jerseys I was shooting. Too bad a 10th grader from the other team hit a game winning 3 with 3 seconds left to spoil what would have been a big upset by our girls team. Missing 7 of 8 freethrows at the end to allow the game winning shot doesn't help either.

same player as the 'featured' shot. love the look on her face in this one.

Not exactly a great shot.. but #'s 11 and 55 are 2 of the 3 seniors who played their final game and #35 is the 10th grader who hit the game winning shot

    Re: Girls BBall (ambient)

Nice stuff for ISO 6400 and the neat image did a good job cleaning it up. It is such and advantage when you can shoot 1/500 of above. Every thing seems so much sharper when you stop all the movement. Those nice white wall didn't hurt anything either.

Very nice. It looks like 3200 iso rather than 6400, very clean. Congrats on the feature!!

She's a soccer 'stud' who scored a few goals on headers off corner kicks this year. Hate to say I never got a good shot of one of those headers.
