OKay got my setup i think?

Just picked up my d300 and 2 lenses. got the 70-200mm af-s vr 2.8G and picked up a 50mm 1.4D. Now i need to learn how to use this new stuff. went to a nephews game but it was extremely dark in there. could not stop the action. only shots i could take were then standing still. everything else was blurry. but i didn't change th iso left everything default to start out with. i wasn't ready. picked the camera up and the game only had 2 minutes left when i got there. any suggestions on different lenses i should look at? thinking again about 17-55mm 2.8

    thanks

You don't need anything I can see right now except a lot of study, getting accustomed to how to use the camera, and a ton of practice. Go shoot, shoot, shoot! And try to have a little fun in between.

As the others said, practice practice and more practice.... make sure you do it in manual mose as this will force you to learn the settings and how they will affect the photos... anyone can shoot in the other modes.

Shoot, shoot, shoot!! Then post some examples and you'll get plenty of help here. Until we start to see some example it's very difficult to give advice other than very general stuff. You have the equipment to do the job it's just a matter of learning how to get the results you want.
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

hjscm, the problem is you shouldn't be carrying around that 70-200 2.8 VR lens. That silly thing is just throwing off your balance - it disrupts your photo chi. To truely rid you of this imbalance, you must quickly dispose of it by sending it my way.

OK, now that I've expressed my coveting nature, tell us how the next game went.

i was thinking maybe to stick with point and shoots, so should send the whole setup your way. That would sure relieve me from getting so frustrated with my ability. LOL i think there is another game tonight i will see if i can do better.

    thanks guys

The frustration is part of the learning curve, for some it comes naturally, others struggle, but either way with dedication and practice you will get the results you want. The trick is to learn your gear, it's limitations and capabilities, and the only way to do that is by practicing constantly.
