Help with Photographing Horses

I ride horses and I also would love to get into taking pictures of my friends ride and horses showing. So I would be taking pictures of horses doing Stadium Jumping, Cross-Country, Dressage, on the trail, just moving around in general. I took my new Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W150 to my friends barn today and took pictures of her jumping stadium and cross country. I got some ok shots in stadium but not great ones and in cross country i couldn't get a decent image. Could anyone please give me some tips for how to photograph horses in motion like this. Thanks.

Welcome to PR Nicole Elizabeth nice to have you aboard. First let me say that I'm not an expert horse photographer and I'm not familiar with your camera. However a couple of things do apply regardless in shooting action type pictures. To stop the action use a fast shutter speed and to blur unwanted backgrounds use a large aperture. Under no circumstance that I can think of should you be using a program mode. Keep control of the situation by using manual settings or priority (shutter or aperture) settings. Your timing has to be good as well get the horse in this case at the peak of the jump or peak of the action. It is essential that your camera be very responsive with very little shutter lag. In order for any of us to give you more specific advice post a few of your shots and give us some technical data so that we can analyze and better help you improve your images. Hope this helped a little and wasn't to elementary for you.
