The important focus area is out of focus, it would be great if the faces were in focus and not the feet. Faster shutter speed and a bit more light would get you great results.

This could have been great with a faster shutter, shallow DOF, and focus on the facial expression. Great capture of the action but no focal point. I'm figuring it's one of those occasions where you didn't expect the move and were set up for less speed.

    Thanks for looking and commenting.

That shot was taken with 70-300 VR, f5, 1/90 sec @ ISO 3200 plus anticipation and luck.

The best shutter speed I got on that day in that gym with a 17-50 f2.8 @ ISO3200 was 1/400 sec. Most of the time it was slower. I don't know how fast a shutter speed is needed to get a face of a human being who is being thrown to the ground in focus and frozen in time. After all, I had never shot a Judo tournament before.

Next time, ideally, I would use a lens with at least f2.8 on a camera a D3 so that I could shoot @ ISO 6400 or higher to get a faster shutter speed, not to mention high fps.

with 1/400 you should be able to stop tecnically every action ... That's the velocity I used taking pictures at the UFC.
I like the picture, not to use in a newspaper, because of the blur. But it shows the action, I think with some post processing looking to a more art related side, it could be a really nice pic
    take care..

Saw your UFC pics. Sharp and in-focus. Makes me jealous ;-)

Mind you though I only got 1/400 on a few occasions. Most of the time it was like a stop or two may be more slower. My 17-50 has f2.8 but couldn't give me the reach. At ISO 3200 I don't really want to crop a whole lot. 70-300 is a f4.5 and so couldn't get much speed out of it.

Here's one of the better ones if not the best (17-50 mm @ 50mm f2.8 1/250sec ISO 3200) Cropped of course, and this's a slower throw:

Noise will be pretty bad at 6400, there is enough at 3200. Any chance of using flash ? I would first check though to make dure your in center point on your focus though as that may be part of the problem.

To me, noise is expected at high ISOs (I shot film years ago) so I don't have big problem with it like some do. Newer cameras seem to be doing pretty good in reducing noise these days. At that event, flash is OK , Well, I tried it with a couple of shots from not so close to the competitors and nobody complained. Then again, nobody else used flash either. Also, another concern is using flash may mean I can only shoot one frame at a time.

As for focusing, I used what they call group dynamic AF. First time ever that I've used that mode for most if not all the shots. Judging by the photos it seems to work fine.

Well, I plan to do more in the future and hopefully could get better results.
