Series Shoot II

I got out today for shoot II in my women athlete series. Here is one of my favorite shots from the evening. It's probably not the shot that I'll use, but I like her fierce expression. I think I like shooting athletes, she showed up ten minutes early, didn't spend 45 minutes doing makeup and actually has real muscle tone (not the painted on type)! ;) The only problem was that since she was prompt and not a crazy makeup diva -- we had to wait around an hour before the sunset.

Really nice! Great light and the background is working for me. I've done several shoots with the female athletes and they are almost always great to work with.

I far prefer the lighting on the landscape format to the portrait.
The three sets of shadows of the wheels are too distracting and to me they detract from the spoke detail.
I prefer the pose/expression on #44 and #42.

But the layered pastel background really makes this portrait image the star.
I just wish it wasn't lit from in front and behind, with deeper shadows from the front light.
I would prefer to have the sunlight casting the deeper shadows and the main fill light a not so bright, with less dense shadows.

My fav is 49, the lighting is great and it has this serene feeling , like she just won a major race and feels good about it. Nice work.

Thanks for the comments and ideas, these have been fun to shoot. I'm just hoping I can keep getting good results (or better) as the series progresses.

Lighting the bike was a challenge -- with all the lights and shadows. That is why I like the shots where Hilary is holding the bike. For those I was able to aim the flashes up higher and not get the blast of light and shadow on the ground. It's crazy, we only really get a few minutes of the light that I'm looking for with the hazy glow and pastelly hills. It's a set-up, shoot a few and then wait, wait, wait, shoot (like crazy) then done and go home.
