    which should I buy

    Help

I want to shoot pictures of my kids playing sports, they are 10 years old. Mostly hockey and some baseball, what camera should I get.

    Canon rebel xt
    nikon 50
    nikon 70

I am a begineer and understand I will need a lens for hockey, which lens. I want to buy today so any help would be great.

    Re: which should I buy

I have a Rebel XT and I reccoment it. Very user friendly. I have not used Nikon, so I can't compare.

The lenses I am targeting for purchase for my Rebel are both Sigma lenses. Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 EX DG and 24-70mm F2.8 EX DG MACRO. These two will set you back as much or a little more than the Rebel XT kit (around $1000). A speedlite flash is good to have too. Those two lenses should cover the range of shooting conditions you will see with kids sports.
My name is Scott, and I take pictures.

    Canon Rebel XT
    EF L 70-200 f/2.8
    Speedlite 580 EX

I would suggest getting a longer lense than just 70mm. Right now I'm looking at the sigma 70-200mm f2.8 lense. If you want to get close to the action you will need something longer than 70mm. Shooting hockey will require a large aperture as well because of the lighting in the arena, so look for a lense that has one. As for cameras I personally have a rebel XT which works great but I have heard good things about the d50 and D70.(the D70 is a bit more expensive though) Its really up to what company you want to go with.

The decision you are making is to go Nikon or Cannon. Both are going to preform pretty much the same. Just need to make a choice on the system you want to go with over the years. Lens will be your main focus over the next few years and you want to pick a system and stick with it. I do think you should go with a longer lens at less in the 200mm range if you are going to be shooting much in the way of sports. There is no subsitute for getting as close to the action with the lens as possible.
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

    Re: which should I buy

What's your budget like? Since all the cameras you mentioned are at the lowest level of DSLR, you're going to get what you pay for - fewer features and less frames per second. That's not a bad thing as you have to learn how to time your shots.

As OT said, you're also going to want a lense with a longer reach than 70mm. The 70 won't get you close enough to the action to get good images. You'll want to consider a 70-200mm lense such as the one by Sigma that retails for around $600. Since you're shooting hockey, which is almost as well-lit as a cave, you'll need a lens with a large apeture. The lower the number, the larger the apeture. The Sigma lens that has been recommended has an apeture rating of 2.8.

Functionally, there is little difference between the low-end Canon and Nikon models, and you will have to pick based on which feels most comfortable for you.

Most of my experience is with the Canon Rebel 300D. While it's a great entry camera I grew out of it as soon as I started shooting a lot. The noise with high iso and only 4 slooooooooooow shots in a row just about killed me. Not only that the recovery after the 4 slug shots...... Gah!:mad2:

I just kept asking questions. Also there are websites you can compare cameras and all of their features side by side. It really helps to see it all charted out.

    Have fun!

    aperture.

As far as sports go, I would say get canon. If you end up getting into higher market lenses, you'll find canon's to be much more impressive, in my opinion. And you can't match the speed of canon's 1 bodies.

Zeta I think the rebel XT/ 350D has improved on all of the things you hated about the 300D/ rebel. The cameras are very close when it comes to performance hard to choose I know I had a hard time.
