Q: Installing a filter in A-100 kit lenses

Today I bought some clear filter to protect my lenses. But the A100 kit lens has this hood or something that prevents me to put it. I think I need to remove that hood, am I right?

How can I remove the hood safely? I'm attaching a pic...

yes, you can remove the hood. Just unscrew it (maybe 1/8 of a turn only).
It's better if you zoom to 70mm so you can actually stop the lens (focusing area) and not force the autofocus motor of the camera.
If you put it back backwards it will work as a hood (as it is in your picture is not doing much).

I usually either put the camera in manual focus mode or take the lens off to prevent turning against the AF motor.

If I use it as a hood, what would it benefit, or make different?

It is a hood, it's just installed backwards for storage/packing purposes. It is designed to shade the lens from light other than what the lens is pointed at. It keeps the exposure from being influenced by stray light and also helps prevent things like flare. The hood on the kit lens doesn't really do much though, as it has to be short to prevent vignetting at the shorter focal lengths.

So, I just think it's better to use the filter then, than keep the hood, right?

Are you using a cokin square type filter that requires a filter holder? A screw on filter shouldn't block the hood from being used.

Indeed, a regular round screw-on filter does not prevent usage of the lenshood, as it will slip readily over both filter and lens cap.

I usually reverse mine (per the pic above) for storage. When getting the camera out to shoot, I flip the hood over to shooting position, just before popping off the lens cap.

Because of the shallow design, the shading effect is limited - effective for keeping true 90-degree side light off the front element, and that's about it. I haven't encountered any side glare problems thus far, though.
