    Quick and dirty break down:
The Alpha has 3 metering modes: Multi-segment, Center-weighted, and Spot.
Multi-Segment will take an average reading from the entire field of view to determine exposure.
Center-Weighted is pretty much the same except it gives more priority to the middle area when calculating exposure.
Spot metering uses just the center area (area in the circle in viewfinder) to calculate exposure.

It also has 3 DRO modes: Off, Standard, Advanced.
DRO effectively reduced contrast in a scene in order to retain details in the shadow and highlight area's of the scene.
Standard I believe uses adjusts the contrast judging the overall scene.
Advanced does it section by section. This takes longer but produces better results.

    Re: Metereing

    Tommy-
Canuck935 posted a good overview of the Sony Alpha's metering and DRO system. I've tested the DRO a bit and honestly haven't been able to distinguish a huge difference in quality between the different DRO settings.

The Sony's metering system is pretty standard. I'm wondering if you needed a description for the Alpha or if you were really looking form more general information on metering technique? If it's a little tutorial you're after, we have one in the Learn section:

Hope that helps add something useful.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. I've worked hard to build a friendly photography community where it's safe to ask questions. I really believe that the only stupid question is the question you don't ask. We're here to help. That said, there's a lot of good stuff in the Learn section. You can also use the forum search to look for topics you want to learn about. There's an amazing amount of stuff available in the forums.
