Sorry, server too busy and only ....

25 people online using the forums. This doesn't seem correct. What's going on PJ.

Surely these new forums would take site conjestion of just 25 people. If it was 100 or more I would understand, but 25.

Peter, I've had that problem too...

But it has only been momentary. IOW, when I refresh, or try to post again seconds later, the thing works fine.

You obviously know much more about computers and servers and such than I do, but I would imagine that pr.com's servers handle some, if not all of the other review sites as well. In that case, collectively there could be MANY more users on at the same time.

Perhaps PJ will clear things up for us...

Ahh, Steve, I just noticed you mentioned this, and you're right!

Sometimes engineering is working on something when we get the error message. I wouldn't be concerned unless the "server too busy" doesn't go away after a half hour or so. More often than not, the problem does goes away within 10 minutes.

    Shared servers

    Peter-
The servers are shared. I'm not sure if all of our sites are running on the same servers, but I think so. In any case, I just checked Mtbr.com and the forums there currently have over 2500 people looking at them. So the load is much, much larger than you thought. However, there still shouldn't be any problems. There were some issues last week and we made a change and I haven't seen any errors since. As Lara said, engineering might be working on something. Please let me know if you continue to see errors.

    Question No errors.......but some "glitches"

    PJ.........just for your info

I still have a glitch in the system somewhere, since the read/unread posts are seldom differentiated (can't tell which I've read). Sometimes the envelopes work, but most of the time they don't. In other words, most of the threads & posts look like I've read them all, most of the time. So, it's quite time consuming to go through each thread every time to see what I've read. At my age, I can't always count on recall!

Also when I click on read unread first (or whatever the option says that scrolls down automatically), it always jumps to the last one or two posts, even if there are 10 posts and I've only read one. Then I have to scroll up to see where I left off.

    Read/Unread

    Liz-
I don't think that's a glitch. This system just works differently. And unfortunately, as far as indicating what's been read, I don't think it works as well as the old system. Basically, it only tells you what's read/unread for each session. That means that if you leave the forum and come back, it will show you what's new since the last time you visited. But it won't show you what's new if you refresh. At least that's how I understand it. Basically, I only use thos envelopes as a vague indicator. If I really want to see what's new, I go take a look. I know that isn't as good as the old forums, but so much of the system is better, that I think it's a small price to pay.

Ok, everyone, understand that they are shared on a server. So if the mountain bike forums are starting to effect other forums then maybe there is a need to look at that issue. When I posted there were only 25 people looking at the photographyreview.com forums, and that is members and visitors in total.

But I have my website that shares one server with many other websites, OK, I don't get the traffic that you guys must get, but I don't know what the other website traffic is like on the server where my sites are hosted.

I only posted it as a meaningful observation, that, there were only 25 people viewing and it wasn't just the one occurance that it has/had happened on. I tried the refresh side of things etc, as Steve has eluded, I do actually understand the internet concept fairly well, and also computer componentry pretty well as well.

It is a small price to pay, but if one forum is starting to effect other forums detrementally then that could also hinder revenues as well.

    Just my thoughts and observations.

Like your new idea of photo testing John, seems like it could enlighten others very well too.

Hi Liz I wonder if it will help you if after you have gone through a session, you select "Mark Forums as Read" under the "Quick Links" dropdown? Or if you want to mark a specific forum read, such as Viewfinder's posts, under "Forum Tools" dropdown, select (mark THIS forum read.)

Just a thought. This is how I keep track of unread posts.

    Smile thanks PJ & Lara

Actually I didn't realize we had these options. Also, PJ, I think you posted this info previously, but I thought it was a temporary thing. Thanks for the clarification.
