PM spam?

I've only just signed up here and I've already received what I can only assume is PM spam, telling me I've won a Nikon SLR (yeah... right...).

Anyway, just thought the admin(s) might like to know. It's still in my board inbox if you want to check it out. It's come from user ExplicitContent22.

Just judging by the username, my guess is its spam.

Weird since I've been here for a few years now and have never gotten spam in a PM

Yeah, sorry about that. It's pretty rare that someone uses the PM system for spam. But someone hit us hard yesterday. I'm not sure how many they sent. But they registered 44 new accounts and probably used them all to spam. The IP address they came from has been banned.

If it happens again let me know. Hopefully it won't. Thanks for letting us know and thanks for joining the site :-)

No worries. I moderate a number of forums myself, so I'm well aware of the problems. Just thought you would want to know (if you didn't already!). ;)

BTW how come I never get those pm smammers? I want a new D300

I had it set up so that you could use the PM system even if you hadn't completed registration. That was so people who had trouble regsitering could get help via the PM system. The spammers exploited that. So I changed it so that only fully registered users can send PMs. Unfortunately, if you try to register now and don't get the activation e-mail, you're pretty much hosed.
