    Photo Contests

I think it is a good idea to have a section or a sticky with photo contests around the net.
I think contests are a great incentive.

I assume a section where all members can add linkys to a contest they found around the net will do....that way we could participate or at least cheer any members that decide to venture in.

We would need to have someone that is willing to investigate the contest and its creators.
I've seen photo contests that just want to be able to get the rights to your photos or will send you a letter telling you how creative and unique you are and that you can buy the book with your photo in it for only $75 dollars and then would you like to attend the conference of international photographers in Orlando,(or someplace) for $300. The last is probably the same bunch that does the poetry.com contest which I'm embarrassed to say I fell for but only once and I didn't go to Orlando.
There are some good ones out there. I know Nat'l Geographic has one or more and other good ones and a link to the good ones would be nice.

I agree that if it is done there needs to be someone that has the time and is willing to check each contest out before leaving them on the site. I don't think just letting anyone post a contest without it being checked out would be a good idea. Members need to be reasonably confident that the contest is legitimate, Jeff

Look at the advertisements along the right hand side of your screen. I see three contests there now. Many contests have been posted in most of the forums at one time or another. Look in the Photography as Art forum periodically. Viewfinder and Nature forums frequently have contests popping where a PR member is participating.

Since a lot of the photography contests on the web are for profit (like 99%) they should get to pay for the ad space. A google search at any given moment will yield bunches of current, up to date, and still active contests. The need to review them for credibility is also really a problem. Scams abound and even the legit one's are suspect in many cases for the restrictions they now demand in lots of cases for the use of the image. Also you may note buried in the fine print (and this has been standard for years) that costs associated with winning can be quite high with no guarantee of actually selling your 'winning photo'.

Note: There are 'free contests' weekly and daily here at Photography Review. Post an image in the Photo Critique Gallery and you might get Photo of the Day or Week! Selection are made for featured photos in a few of the forums including Critique, Sports, and Nature.

I think a Google search might be the best option. Trying to check these things out to see if they are legitimate would be a nightmare. Also what would or would not qualify. I think this is something better left up to the individual to search out and participate in, Jeff
