    Red face D90: Early Retirement?

Hi Nikon Guys....I'm at approx 75,000 shutter activations in a 3 year period according to my calculations....All the back panel button logos are long worn away (WBN) overall still kickin' butt with this rig.
Does anyone know the "normal" shutter life of a Nikon DSLR? The D90 in particular. I would rather retire this rig early that have it fail...lol

    Thank you in advance

    Rick

Oh no Rick...I remember when you "ordered" it..you counted down the days, your excitement was just bubbling over. I'm sure it will keep on plugging for you, you have taken some amazing photos with this baby.

This is just a shot in the dark, but I want to say they're rated for about twice what you've put on it...if not 250k.
    mostly Nikon gear

    "100,000-cycle shutter release tests"

It's written here on page 12.

    http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/dslr...df/d90_16p.pdf

Which doesn't mean that it won't do more that's just how far they tested it. Might be worth moving upmarket if you do so many pictures. The D300/D700 was tested for 150,000 cycles and the D800 for 200,000 cycles.

I think that 3 years is too early to change - Nikon's release cycle is typically about 4 years so I would wait for a while.

Rick, if you still have your D80 as back up I wouldn't give it a second thought about keeping it. On the other hand if you are looking for an excuse to buy a new camera, I would say it is on it's last leg and you need to get rid of it. Jeff

    Re: D90: Early Retirement?

Thanks EVERYONE... for all the feedback. Your responses really made me think... Yes, my D80 needs to be brought out-of-retirement. I have 3 P&S cameras now, shoot less. Good idea.......
    I'll wait a year & keep shooting. :O)

    Much appreciated info, Charles!.

    Re: D90: Early Retirement?

Right now I'm on holiday in Berlin. As usual for risky situations I'm using my lowest-value DSLR (D200) and rediscovering what a great, simple camera it is. The D800 is at home waiting for my next semi-pro shoot.

To make it easier for you to wait - it's rumoured that Nikon will introduce a full-frame D600 body at relatively low cost before the end of the year. Now that just might interest you.
