How do you like your D7000?

I have had mine for about a year and it is the best camera I have ever owned. The quality is great the features are many and it nails the shots. I am very happy with all it's functions and plan on having it for quite some time. There is a lot to learn with this camera to be able to get the most out of it and not waste the many features that it offers. I am well on my way to really learning as much about the abilities of this camera and how to use them as I can. I am extremely happy with my D7000 and would like to hear what other have to say about it, Jeff

Re: How do you like your D7000?

The reason for posting this thread is because I have read about different problems on the internet that people have had with the D7000 and was wondering if anyone on out site has experienced any with their camera. I am very happy with my D7000 and have not had any problems with mine in the year I have had it. I'm curious as to why we have not had anybody post problems on this site when there are several problems listed on the internet. All the reviews are very positive about this camera and brag on how good it is. I know we have several people that own the D7000 that are members and surely would have posted any problems they might have had with their camera. Just don't understand what is going on, Jeff

Don't listen to the people on Internet. A few unknown people have (or think they have) problems with a product and then they go on and on about it on some other sites till they blow it up into a "problem". (Example: the left focus points on the D800 and D4)

Occasionally there is a genuine problem but that usually gets reported by "real" experts and journalists (example: the auto-focus on the top-of-the-line camera from another manufacturer a couple of years ago)

What problems? The only issue I have is that live view takes a view seconds to switch on if it hasn't been used in a while, but I don't use it that often, so...

I absolutely love mine. Having been in photography for over 40 years, some of it on a professional basis when we shot with Nikon's, I can state that this is the best camera I have ever owned. I do not want to go on about the various qualities as those of us that do own one already know them.

As for the complainers, sure there will be faults with some of them, that is normal, but when faults are found, owners panic and the whole thing gets lots of forum time.

Re: How do you like your D7000?

I have been very impressed with what mine does and how it does it. I don't have any of the problems that I have read about and have to wonder why on our site we all seem to be happy with the D7000 while on another site I look at they just seem to have all kinds of problems, Any way I am very happy with mine and would recommend purchasing one to anybody that is considering getting one.

Frog, as far as the price I thought it was very reasonable for the quality of camera and the features that you get. In my opinion it list for only $200 more than the D80 or D90 listed for and does much more. Right now there is a $100 rebate that makes it look even better. It may be more than you want spend or have the budget but I think it is worth every penny I spent on it, Jeff

Yes, Jeff...I was surprised when I finally looked it up after seeing your D7000 tips thread being so active and was surprised at the reasonable price...about same as I spent on my D80 when I got it.
I may have to just start selling some stuff I'm too old to use anymore around here.

Re: How do you like your D7000?

I have had my D7000 for about a year as well, and am very happy with it. Since I'm still a novice and still learning how to use this camera, I can honestly say that when a shot did not turn out well, it was my lack of experience.
I also would recommend this camera to anyone that has the money to buy one.

Re: How do you like your D7000?

Definitely very pleased with mine. Good image quality, easy to use, lots of features, fast (fps). I have some minor gripes, for example, it takes too long to manually move between focus points, there's quite a few available to choose from, if you need to move all the way across the screen to compose a particular scene, I would like it to move faster (on continuous hold of the button). Also, you often have to press the shutter halfway before you can move the focus point around...seems a waste of time, since the jogdial is only ever used for the that purpose even BEFORE you press the shutter halfway (i.e. the jogdial doesn't do anything ELSE until you do). Same is true of aperture and shutter dials (A and B dials).

Autofocus performance during video is not very impressive. I know it's not a video camera, but look at what other manufacturers are achieving with video in DSLR...similarly, it's a real shame that it won't shoot 60fps video (one can always hope for the fabled firmware upgrade to address this, but somehow, I have a feeling that's a bit of a unicorn...). If I replace this camera in the short to medium term, it will be because of the video aspect, nothing else.

Other than such minor niggles, very very happy with it! Here, have a couple of pics for taking the trouble to read my post...

I am happy to hear you are one of the many that really like your D7000. As far as the having to move the focus point from one side all the way across to the other I would like to make a suggestion. Go to custom settings and scroll down to "a5" and turn on focus wrap. If your focus point was over on the right side of the screen and you wanted it on the left you would no longer have to go all the way across the screen. What you can do now is continue on to the right and it would wrap around the camera and pop up on the left hand side saving you some time instead of having to work your way all the way across the screen.

As far as having to press the shutter half way down first, the reason for that is to activate the meter and focusing. If you need the meter and focus points to stay on longer to be able to move the focus point and get it where you need it, check out tip #50 in my Nikon Tips thread.

I love mine tho learning cure is high. Need to find a fast wide angle lens now. I have a 50 mm 1.4 but need something wider that I can use when I shot live bands in dark arenas.

Re: How do you like your D7000?

    Grandpaw,

I love my D7000! I have been shooting with mine for about a year. I have a battery grip on mine and it seems like I can shoot forever. I have taken few thousand pics with mine and have been very pleased. I have not run into any of the problems you see on the internet. When I purchased this it was the best camera in it's price range for a prosumer camera. I think the only step up from this camera would be a full frame but I do not think I need to spend that much money on a camera at this time.

Grandpaw I think you replied to one of my posts last year. I shoot club and high school volleybal for my daughters teams. Man oh man is volleyball a tough sport to shoot. the gyms always have horrible light and you have to stop the action to get it right. Anyways I enjoy your posts and comments. Keep up the great work. Shooting is slow right now due to a few weeks of no volleyball but I did finally get to shoot a subject I have been trying to catch for over a year now. I have not done much post production on them but let me know what you think.

Looks like you are doing pretty good with your camera. The first one is my favorite of the three.

You might consider using a larger F-stop like maybe F5.6 or so and dropping your shutter speed to 1/1000 or 1/1500 and that will let you use a lower ISO. Myself on a humming bird shot I like to be able to see a little movement in the wings. I just like the feeling of action by seeing some blur in the wing movement. You have some nice shots here, keep up the good work. Jeff

Re: How do you like your D7000?

I'm certainly missing mine. It's been out for a couple weeks now, and will be out for several more
I've recently adopted a d3100, which is certainly no replacement, but it's putting some good IQ and resolution in my hands until the 7k gets home.
