    Nikon D40/D70

    Hello,

This is my first posting, I am in Japan.
    I need your advice.

I have just ordered Nikon D70 though it is old but I like it.

Please let me know D40 or D70 you think is good. I am sorry
asking after ordering, I should have asked earlier.

Or if I change after some months which DSLR will be good,(budget can be adjust)easy to use, with zoom, and nice Live view

I was not aware in D70 Live view is not possible.
I have to leave earthquake after shock here.

    Thank you

    Re: Nikon D40/D70

The d40 is a more basic camera. I'm not real familiar with the d70, but I'm pretty sure it's probably set up to be an enthusiast camera, while the d40 is more geared towards amateurs. The d40 is newer than the d70, so I may have some updated abilities. No live view it it either. If you decided to upgrade, a used d90 should do you very well. If the budget allows, the newest d7000 is fantastic.

    Re: Nikon D40/D70

I have owned the D70 and the D60 which is very similar to the D40.

The D70 is for "Experts". I used it the D70 for my semi-pro missions with no problem.

    - it has the same control layout as the high-end Nikons with seperate knurled wheels to control Aperture and Shutter speed.
    - It can control Nikon's flashes remotely
    - It has a flash sync speed of 1/500s (exceptional)
    - It can autofocus with most of Nikon's older lenses
    - The 18-70 kit lens is excellent - one of the best I have ever had
    - The LCD screen on the back is really small
    - It only goes to 1600 ISO and at 1600 ISO there is really a lot of noise

The D40 is for "Consumers". I used it for holidays and risky missions:

    - There are lots of program modes for different types of scenes - but when you want to set something specific you have to go through lots of menus or even use a specific program mode.
    - The D40 has the same 6MPix sensor as the D70 but it has a much more recent image processor so there is much less noise
    - The D40 won't autofocus with older lenses that don't have an AF-S motor built-in
    - The 18-55 kit lens is actually quite good - but it feels like plastic and generally cheapens the feel of the camera

Neither the D40 nor the D70 have Live View or Video. These are quite old cameras.

Not buying any more gear this year. I hope
