    Tough guy

From a recent shoot in a very cool old building in Miami. Are the clipped hands killing this one?

    Re: Tough guy

Almost looks like a shot from a video game promotion piece. like GTA or something. I think the lighting works, the softness in some places give it that artificial CGA look. I didn't even notice the clipped hands until you pointed them out. They don't hurt this for me. but if you were going for the tough look, i wish it was more gritty looking, like a bit sharper and rougher.

    Re: Tough guy

This is about as *tough* as male fashion models get  but I could boost the high pas filter to get a grittier look. In retrospect I probably should have switched to a gridded spot, but this was shot with a softbox as there were a number of dresses to photograph as well.

Glad to hear the hands don't bother you (at least someone has an opinion after 50 page views )

    Re: Tough guy

The hands cropped does not bother me much. I don't think it kills the deal. I think the processing is fine and the comp is pretty interesting. I feel though that he may have needed a bit of rim/backlighting to get him to stand off the similar tone and color background.
I just think he needs to pop a bit more.
    Pretty cool shot, Jet

Very nice shot, a bit dark I'll say, but I'll guess you were going after that kind of light

difficult exposure well accomplished, nice sharp focus on the model

Close, but just a tad to dim. Lots of stuff working though.

The hands aren't all that off-putting, but he does appear to blend with his background. Try playing with the lighting to bring some textural or contrasting effects.

I also thought it looked like a CG scene. The clipped hands aren't "killing it", but I think it would look better with them.

    Red face Re: Tough guy

Have to admit I'm a little bit lost as to where to take this one...
Anybody want to have a go at illustrating their suggestions, here's the unretouched version - straight out of the camera except for RAW processing...

    Re: Tough guy

The only suggestion I can think to make is to try converting the background into b&w keeping the edges of the pic darker, then lighter as you get closer to the subject? I like the skin tone better in the first one...I'm not sure if that will help though. Ah well I tried
