My first attempt at posting - from Flickr

Great Blue Heron - Viera Wetlands

LINK REMOVED by OP, see GREEN comments below. Thanks.

This was taken during a vacation last November and I thought I should try to share some of these images with the folks here who have been kind enough to share theirs with me. So hopefully this will work.

    WesternGuy

Well, it takes you to the photo, but doesn't post the photo in the thread. Anyone have any insight on posting images from flickr so the image, rather than the link shows up - personally, prefer not to click links myself. I know it can be done, because I have done it on other sites, but I wasn't sure how this forum treated flickr references. I will go and ask on the flickr help forum as well and see if they can shed any light on how to do this.

For those interested, two of my images are posted here. You can see them by scrolling down through the discussion on how to post images from flickr - my thanks to iguanamom, CaraRose and Loupey for helping me get this all straightened out

Go to your photo on flickr
    click view other sizes
    select the size you want
right mouse click and choose to copy image location
open a message in the forum and click the picture icon
paste the URL into that box
    click OK

it should appear when your message goes live.

Once you get the image location like Iguanamom explained, you can put in a standard HTML image tag with it if you know how.

iguanamon, thanks for the reply...Let's see if I understand all of this...from my original posting (i.e., my "home page" so to speak), I double click on the image and get a bigger single image with two buttons at the top - one says "Actions", the other says "Share this". If I click on "Share this", I get a drop down menu with a bunch of choices..."Grab the link"..."Grab the HTML/BBCode", etc. If I "Grab the link", then I get what I end up with in my first post - a URL to paste into my posting that simply gives people a link to click - now I don't like clicking links unless I have to, so I am going to assume that I click on the "Grab the HTML/BBcode" choice. When I do that, I get two radio buttons - one for HTML and the other for BBCode, plus a selection box that allows me to select a size. So I select a size, but this is where I get lost...do I click on the HTML radio button, or the BBCode button...regardless, do I paste all of the information that comes up in the small display into my posting - let's try something...

    [IMG]IMG_1573-Edit-Edit.jpg[/IMG]

This seems to work - I used the complete HTML code, except that the IMG tags are showing - should they be - not that it bothers me, but there must be away to post this so the tags do not show? Anyway, I found something that works, guess I will have to experiment with it a bit to see if perhaps using the BBCode material will work and not have the IMG tags show up. Again, thanks for your help, I think the main thing I was missing was the picture icon which sets up the IMG tags.

    Regards,

    WesternGuy

Re: My first attempt at posting - from Flickr

So let's try one with the BBCode and see what happens...I will try another picture...

That works also, but the IMG tags are still showing???
Anyway folks, you now have two of my images of GBHs from my visit to Florida last November - this second one is from the Titusville Blue Heron wetlands, north of the Viera wetlands. It was a holiday I will never forget - Florida is a bird photographer's paradise and I will go back sooooon...

    WesternGuy

EDIT IMAGE: I removed the IMG tags from the posting info and the image still posts, so I guess it is not needed - confirmed in later postings by Loupey.

Thanks CaraRose, I just saw your comments now, you must have got them in there while I was experimenting with the posts that follow yours and my reply to iguanamom. I have something that works, now how to get it so the IMG tags aren't showing...so now I can post a few more...to come later...a few things to clean up before I do that...

I would try removing the [img] tags out of whatever code your copying and see if it still posts.

Thanks, ...the IMG tags are coming from clicking on the "picture" icon and then inserting the "pasted link" before it ends up in my actual post, but I will do that and see what happens.

that's not precisely what I typed, but whatever if it works. maybe you'll never want to post anything but the small versions.

Well, I did have a bit of a problem, because as you typed...Go to your photo on flickr/click view other sizes...when I went to my photostream on flickr I could not see anything that said other sizes, maybe we are looking at a different view of our images on flickr. Anyway, that is what got me confused when I couldn't see anything about viewing "other sizes", so I just winged it from there. The only way I could see anything having to do with size was to double click the image and that is when I got the image with the drop-down boxes about "Actions" and "Share this" and when I clicked on "Share this", the drop-down box gave me choices of "Grab the link" or "Grab the HTML/BBCode". It is only when I grabbed the HTML or the BBCode, that I got an option to pick a size. I copied the code from the HTML or the BBCode boxes and returned to this forum, selected the "Insert Image" icon and pasted the code I had copied from Flickr into the Image box and clicked okay and everything posted okay from there, except the IMG tags are showing and probably should not, so I will edit them out in a trial and see if that fixes it or screws things up again.

Your clue about the "Insert Image" icon was what really helped though, because I didn't know about that bit.

These images are, in fact, the larger medium sizes, so I am not sure what you mean when you say..." maybe you'll never want to post anything but the small versions"...next time, just for comparison, I will post what they call the "large" size.

Iguanamom, does any of this make sense to you - you are welcome to go and look at my flickr stream to see what I mean and what I did....

    phew. ok.
go to one of your images. click it. the image itself. this brings you to an on black presentation. in the upper right corner is a link that says view all sizes.
    click that
it will bring you to another page that displays the sizes available.
    choose one.
right mouse click on the image itself.
    select copy image location
select image icon in the message board post
    paste in dialog box

    that should do it.

under the actions tab when you're in the photostream there is a view all sizes choice there as well. it will take you to the same page where you can select a size. do that then right mouse click on the image itself to copy the image location.

Your flickr and mine must be operating differently because...

when I am on the page that allows me to select the size, once I have done that, if I right-click on the image, I do not get anything that allows me to select copy the image location as you have indicated (my underlining above) -- I get a standard "COPY" menu (scroll down variety) which has a COPY item on it, but selecting that and then going to a new post and trying to paste a location into the Image icon box doesn't happen because the "Paste" is greyed out.

What I discovered...if I click on the initial image on my home photostream page, then double click on the image that comes up, then I get the "on-black" presentation that you mention with an icon in the upper right that says "view all sizes", if I click on that icon, then I end up at the "sizes page" to select a size, so far so good, this is the same page you note that you can get to from the Actions tab by selecting all sizes, this is when I get lost, because right-clicking on the image, once I have determined the size, does not give me a menu option to "copy image location" --- this where I have to go to the image page where the "Action" and "Share this" tabs are located, click on the "Share this" tab and then the "Grab the HTML/BBCode" and go from there as indicated in my previous posting. I have discovered that I can paste either the HTML code or the BBCode into the Image Icon box and that produces an image when the post is "posted"... so that is where I stand or sit , as the case may be, don't know why mine behaves differently than yours, but I guess the key is that, at least, now I can post images from my flickr account. All I have to do now, is see if I can figure out how to get it so that on the Forum post, the IMG tags do not show.

Thanks for all your help and persistence with this - it is sincerely appreciated.

    Regards,

    WesternGuy

I tried it on the second image and it looks like it works, so it looks like it is the BBCode from flickr that is the key for my images. Thanks for the suggestion.

That is not what I get...I wonder if it has anything to do with the way our images are uploaded to flickr. I upload mine using a preset from within Lightroom 3. I wonder how you and iguanamom upload your images?

Maybe that has an effect on how this thing is behaving???

P.S. I will try and get a screenshot of what I get and post it later...have to run now..errand time before dinner...

I don't get the "copy image location" either. I think it is an Internet Explorer thing. I do get the option if I use Firefox.

For IE, I do the following:

    1) in your photostream click on the "share this" tab as you did before
    2) click on the "grab the HTML/BBCode
    3) select the size you wish to display
    4) make sure the HTML radio is on
    5) click inside the html code box (which highlights everything) and right click and "copy"
    6) inside your forum thread, just "paste" the entire code whereever in the thread you wish to display it

    Notes:
    1) this forum uses the HTML when done this way. In other forums, you need the BBCode version of it
    2) you can always check before submitting by clicking "Preview Post"

Hey cool - that Firefox/copy location works pretty nicely.

I'll have to play around a bit with it to see what the advantages are with both methods.

EDIT: OK it looks like they both are about the same number of "clicks" to perform. The only difference that I can see is that with the "copy image location" method, it does not provide the direct link to your flickr image by simply clicking on the image (if that is what you want).

Thanks Loupey, this definitely helps me understand what is going on - so it was a browser thing - who would have thought... . For this forum, I have figured out that both the HTML and the BBCode work, because the first picture was done using the HTML code and the second one was done using the BBCode, but as you have suggested, not all forums will be like this. So now I guess I can go and post a few more of my images, maybe I should start over again, now that I know how to do this and put all the pics in one single posting, that way people don't have to dig through the methodology stuff to get to the images.

Loupey, you are a mod for this forum, do you think this will be acceptable to folks, if I re-posted the images, together with a few more so they are all in one easily acceptable post - I would really like to begin to share some of these images from Florida (I took over 500 all together!), now that I finally am getting to the end of the line in processing them and of course, get some feedback (I am not going to post all 500 (LOL) -- just a few examples of some of the ones I think are worth posting and that I would like to share with the folks here(??)...).

    Regards,

    WesternGuy.

    Sure, no problem!

Just start a new thread with the images you want. I won't delete this thread as it is useful for other members. If you want, you can always edit the posts in this thread and delete those images so it won't be duplicated in your new thread.

That's the big difference - you can always delete images yourself by using these methods.

Thanks Loupey. I will do that, then the ones I wish to share will all be together and the location they were taken can be noted with each image. I agree with the decision to leave this posting so others can learn (from my learning) - that is part of what these forums are all about - I will also leave the two images, even though they will be duplicates, that way people can understand better what was going on in the exchange I had with igaunamom, CaraRose and yourself. Thanks again for all your help with this.
