    Indy 500 - fan's eye view

A few from around the Freedom 100 and Indy 500 itself.
You have to get there really early to get a good parking spot.
Like before dawn ... before the 6am cannon!

First time at Indy, so it was all new.
The pagoda, the pylon, the pre-race, the fly past, parade laps 3-wide.
I know what to expect next year.

cdp - where are you for the credentialled view?

Thank goodness for the catch fencing that meant I couldn't get clear shots of the race.
Mike Conway had a lucky escape, and without that fencing I had visions of fan injuries.
The car did what it should and he survived, and the fence did what it should.

Nice set of fan pics Paul. Indy is something special for sure. Didn't realize this was your first. I just imagine you at every big race. I only live 3 hours from Indy but have only been to the big day once. It was an incredible experience with great front stretch grandstand seats. A.J. Foyt won his 4th that day.
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

With a fence like that in front of the cars, AF isn't going to work reliably.
I focussed manually on halfway across the track.

Then slowed down the shutter speed, closed down the aperture, and got the panning speed right. Plus a bit of timing to catch the cars in between the uprights.

Looks like you and Angie had a wonderful time there! I miss going to that race. It really is "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing"

Indy replaced Chicago this year, we were talked into it by Martin.
Might you make it to Homestead?

I'm jealous of your Borg-Warner trophy shot. Never got one that it wasn't swarmed with people, posed, or in the museum. Some day!

Nice shot. How early was it in the morning?

    Re: Indy 500 - fan's eye view

    Around 06:20
We were in the queue on the road at about gate 6 when the cannon went off.

Trophy shot was only because of a pit lane pass from Martin.
