    Portrait or Landscape

    Any preferences?

Comments, critiques, or ideas are welcome too. I was in Santa Cruz, CA. doing some shooting around the tide pools and saw these two girls standing there talking, so after asking them, I positioned myself to catch the reflection in the foreground and the clouds in the background.

    Thanks,

    Portrait for me.
In the landscape one, their heads are too close to the top....would want less foreground and more sky.
    Beautiful colors.

Portrait. For some reason it diminishes the disadvantage of the darkess of the figures. BUt they are both brilliant.

    Re: Portrait or Landscape

I prefer the landscape one, mainly because I don't care for the objects at the bottom of the frame. It kind of takes the focus off of the people and sky. I prefer the exposure of the first though.

I like the portrait photo ,
    it has better exposure
the clouds forming a circle above their heads are great
the reflection in the water is also great.

I would probably crop the foreground rock, to me it breaks the fantastic harmony of the rest of the image.

Portrait. I would crop from the bottom a bit to an 8x10 ratio. Lovely scene.

Very nice shot!! I agree with Gary on both points. In the landscape version the subjects are too close to the top of the frame and by going with the portrait shot it not only adds more room between the subjects and the top of the frame it lets us see more of that beautiful sky and also eliminates some of the foreground with the 8x10 crop, Jeff

Thanks for all the great feedback. It sounds like portrait is the winner, but with a consensus for an 8x10 crop. How does the attached look?

    Thanks again,

    Re: Portrait or Landscape

portrait. the landscape one is lacking the framing elements around the edges. also they aren't as close to the 1/3 intersection and the heads are to close to the top. the leading lines (pointing towards teh subjects) are great in both, but just a tad stronger in the portrait one.

    Re: Portrait or Landscape

Thanks Greg, Dylan, Grandpaw, and Frog. I was originally toying with the idea of the crop, but worried that it put the horizon too near the center.

    Again, thanks for the feedback.

    Re: Portrait or Landscape

The cropped edit looks great. Its not in the center at all, but I'm thinking with a scene like this even if the horizon did go into center, there is so much happening above with the silhouettes and the swirling clouds that it would not matter. But it doesn't, its fine and congrats. A winner.

    Re: Portrait or Landscape

for the two shots shown, I would prefer the portrait.

If I had the chance to shoot that same scene, I would have used a wider lens and put the people toward the bottom of the frame, perhaps in a corner to show the vastness of the great scene. Keep enough of the reflection in the pool.

Great job in keeping enough detail in the shadow and highlights.

    shootme, Cindy, Dubbs, & Loren,

Thanks for the feedback and comments.

Loren, I can certainly get back there - this is in Santa Cruz near Natural Bridges. Unfortunately, I'm not sure I can count on the weather or having people available. This was also shot with a Canon 10-22, so that's about as wide as I can go. :-)

I'll have to keep those thoughts in mind the next time I have an opportunity like this.
