    Sailing boat

Just thought I would see what everyone thought of this one. I know the horizon is near the center but when I tried cropping it it just didn't look right. Horizontal or vertical crop? Jeff

Horizontal for me - your foreground is way too cool to lose, and I like the tree in the bg

    Re: Sailing boat

I'd go with a vertical but much tighter, zooming in on the boat but including its reflection and some of the pier.

I prefer the vertical. That piling blocking her bow bothers me.

I agree with Frog. Sometimes centering a horizon is the only way to go. The piling is the biggest problem here. Maybe you should try and clone it?

Hmmm, i have to go with the horizontal crop here. It looks like a painting in that framing somehow. I agree about the pyle hurting the image by blocking the bow.
whatever your doing in PP, watch your halos , very noticeable around the tress in the distance.
Good subject and pretty nice execution, Jeff.

It was a very hazy day when these were taken. These shots were taken minutes earlier, Jeff

    Re: Sailing boat

Hey Jeff - The top one is attractive to me. I like the deep rich colors and the geometry of the building on the right. I am not sure about how the building is slightly clipped as it is, but I think it would be fine under certain circumstances (magazine cover, etc.). I'd sharpen it just a tad.

The one below it has a nice profile of the boat, better than the top one. Pret-ty sharp image there, very good detail.

Both are superior to the original one IMHO. These look well composed and of a worthy subject. The original post the boat looked overloaded and partially blocked by the pier.

    Re: Sailing boat

I prefer the landscape format of the original

I think the portrait format works best if it were a "portrait" of just the boat.

The layout of the pilings and boat isn't harmonious and balanced. Not much you could do about that, though. I've shot piers and pilings and never gotten much that I liked -- couldn't quite figure it out. Your photo is better than I've ever gotten, though.

I really prefer the last two shots, especially the first of the last two. The boat and the building balance one another and I like the colors.

I just posted some shots of my own on the critique board under "Dive Series," should you care to leave a comment.

    Thanks.

I was riding down the beach when I saw this boat. I had to act quickly and only had a minute or two to get all the shots I took. This is the original of the top shot with nothing done to it. It was shot through a chain link fence and I think I could have taken a little more time and included more of the lighthouse, Jeff

Actually, I find the looking through the fence shot kind of interesting in its own way. Not sure others will agree with me, but it's artsy.
