    A pirate looks at 40

Titled because of the uncanny resemblance of the boatman to Jimmy Buffet (for those that don't know - Buffet is/was a fairly famous Floridian folk singer and the title of the image was the title of one of his more famous songs).

Yes, it's harsh midday sun, but...that's when the boat showed up Any suggestions for improvement?

    Can't think of a thing.
Looks like a warm sunny Florida day on the ocean.

    I feel warmer already.....

Re: A pirate looks at 40

I would like to start out by saying my PhotoShop skills on a rating of 1 to 10 would come in around a strong 1 with 10 being the best. I did a very bad job at this but I think a little more blue and contrast in the sky and a little less blue on the white boat would make it look better. Maybe if someone that knew what they were doing tried it the end result would be an improvement but at least you can pick up on what I was trying to do. I did too much of both but you get the idea, Jeff

I really like the overall pastel turquoise look of it. As for the boatmen; definetely an over 40 victim of fate.

    Very nice!

If it can be improved, I can't see how.

Maybe it is just me but the colors over the entire picture seem off to me, Jeff

    Jeff,
I like what you've suggested regarding defining the sky better - I can do that. Regarding colors being off and the "white boat": This is a seafoam green boat, actually that's what caught my eye. The ocean really is emerald green here that's why I liked it against the seafoam

My mistake, I thought it was supposed to be a white boat. That is a very unusual color for a boat. I would say that 99.9% of the boats in my area are white, Jeff

I think it is as good as you are going to get. I like the composition. But it reminds me of the old Flipper show more than Buffet. LOL

    Jet,

It's very bright, some would say overexposed. But I think the photo can work like that, though only IF the subject is properly exposed, and he and the book look too bright to me though. The adjustment doesn't seem to make much difference to me. I tried my own adjustment but I just couldn't get it right. Ahhhh...

    Thanks for the comments everyone!

GB, believe it or not this is a fairly high dynamic range shot and nothing is clipped here. All the detail remains in the whites and the blacks. Histogram shows all color channels plus hue, saturation, lightness all well within acceptable boundaries. So I'm wondering what leads you to believe it's overexposed...(not picking on you, just trying to see if there's something I overlooked)

I like it the way it is. but if you have this in raw, i think underexposing it might make it better. just theory though

edit: I just read your conversation above. I don't think it's over exposed either, but i think an under exposure might help this one out!

Re: A pirate looks at 40

Jim - It's possible that it isn't so much over-exposed as having a washed-out look to the detail and colors. It's almost as if the blue and green have white paint added to them (if that makes any sense ...), and there's VERY low contrast in the scene, causing everything to have almost the same tonality. I haven't tried converting it to BW to see but that may reveal something.

It could be the time of day it was shot at that caused what I am seeing!

OK, now I get what you're saying! I've tried the suggested adjustments, but I don't know that I prefer them...

Re: A pirate looks at 40

Interestingly enough, I went back and looked at a few other shots taken at the same time, and it never ceases to amaze me how much the metering changes from one shot to the next. (yes I know why, but it's still fascinating to me)

Here's a tighter crop taken a few minutes later once the boat had drifted back into that darker patch behind it in the original shot - looks like a completely different location, not 100 yds. away:

I still like the first one best.
I think you heave a good eye for the color of that water.
It is amazing how water color can shift from place to place.
    It's always in flux.
I like the last one too. love those highlights on the boat.

    Jet -

I find the new posting's color saturation and brightness much more normal and accurate. Not that the other shot's look can't work, but to me it just seems not to be there, transparent almost. I have also noticed meters not accurately working on water w/ reflection from the sun. I just bracket and choose the best one.
