    Surprize of a lifetime

Yesterday in my first shot I was about 8 to 9 feet away from a bird taking a picture. To my surprise I found out that the bird that I was taking a picture of still about 8 to 9 ft away and I were not alone. The second picture shows what popped out of the water trying to get dinner. Neither of the pictures have been cropped and are shown as they were taken. I had no idea the alligator was even there. Where the jaws are is exactly where the bird was a split second ago. The bird was just a little faster and did get away. I guess you never know what might happen on a picture taking outing. It happened soooo fast, I wish I had gotten the bird in the frame also but I feel lucky that I managed to get the alligator under these circumstances, Jeff

    +1!

Very nice capture. Looks like it's a veggy diet for the gator today.

    Outstanding.

Considering how fast an alligator strikes, I think just getting this shot is awesome.

LOL, and I agree with Ray about pants changing.

Wow!!! That is incredible!!! Do you think that one of the reasons you were able to get so close to the bird was because it was aware of the gator and was keeping an eye on it?

Now that you know the gator is there, do you think you'll be able to get more shots of it? Is it in a lake?

    Re: Surprize of a lifetime

I took this yesterday morning. These are taken near the local bayous and marsh and are in the wild and not at an alligator farm. This photo has not been cropped and was taken from about 6 of 7 ft. Going by the birds reaction I think it was just as surprized as I was, Jeff

    Excellent series, Grandpaw!!!

#1) Definitely something I don't evey have to think about in my parts.

#2) Definitely something I'll keep in mind when traveling down south (because of #1).

YIKES! If I were you I think I might have had a heart attack! If you look close at the first photo, above the herons bill, it looks to me like you can see the gator under the water.
    Congrats on this capture!

Seems so strange to us in the northern climes but there is dangerous wildlife everywhere and I'm glad you're seeing them before they see you.

Sometimes we forget how aggressive these animals can be, but every now and then they remind us!
