Red Bull Air Show Photos ...

Some photos from the Red Bull airshow in San Diego last weekend. Not super excited about my images.. ol' GB used too slow a shutter speed on some of them, a very rookie thing to do! (someone at the show mentioned that he was using a slower SS so to get some blur on the propellers, which convinced me to lower mine, but TOO MUCH. ).

Anyway - a fun day. Here are a few shots

I don't think it was too much. I like them.
I've watched them on tv and they sure have to have a lot of skill.
Whatever telephoto you used make them look way to close to the buildings.
    I'm sure they weren't

Even though these aren't perfect I'm really psyched to see them here. I'm glad you shared them with us. Focus and shutter speed do look a bit off. But to some extent the subject and your composition is cool enough to make up for some technical imperfection. One thing that can and should be fixed is the color. Your white balance is very different in each shot and in some it's obviously off. There's really no excuse for that. If it's worth sharing, it's worth setting up as best you can.

Re: Red Bull Air Show Photos ...

John - I set it to Auto WB for most of them. I did experiment with manual white balances right there and did a quick review to see the delta, but I found that Auto worked at least as well. As far as the colors being different - they are, but this has more to do with inconsistent PP, not the WB. I adjusted each to some degree and I some just came out differently.. it sure looks odd I admit, but I'm not sure which is the 'right' color to use, hence couldn't set it to anything. The one that really looks different is the top one, where I believe I added a bit too much warmth.. It may be too odd looking even if stand alone (?)

Frog - I sort of like the buildings in the background ! You can see from the one shot where there's nothing but blue back there that it just isn't as interesting. The folks that paid to sit in chairs on the mainland side were a tad bit closer but I am betting that their images (if they took any) weren't as interesting due to that. Anyway - I think I would prefer them sharper myself, but I like that you don't think they're a total loss.

    Software?

Auto white balance is fine. The only time I don't use it is in tungsten light or the studio. You really can't go wrong with auto white balance if you're shooting RAW because you can fine-tune it any way you want.

I assume you mean post processing when you say "PP?" Are you shooting RAW? What software are you using? If my color were this inconsistent I'd look at the color temp on all of them and adjust it manually so they match better. With Lightroom I might correct one and the select them all and sync them for color. That works really well if you need to make a bacth correction. Maybe we should be discussing this on your Post Processing forum
