Official opening to the Ontario Race season this weekend

I can't wait. The Trans AM series rolls into Mosport this weekend along with the Canadian Castrol Touring Car Series. A good friend of mine will be shooting video footage of the Hyundai Genesis Race Team in the CCTCS and has given me his media pass for shooting stills and background stuff for him this weekend. It's not the big leagues... but it's a start.

I will be out of range for internet (gotta get me an air card damnit) until Sunday night so when I return I will have images to post =)

Hurry back with those shots. Last time I was a Mosport was Jackie Stewart's last F1 race. - TF

Here's some from the Sunday racing sessions. Probably going to be 2 more posts after this one to get all my favourites in.

Different locations for some panning shots. I definitely still need to work on my panning but I feel I did ok for the first attempt of the season.

And a mix of other shots that I liked from the weekend. I know the panning was way off on #3 in this set but for some unexplainable reason it is my favourite shot of them all. I just love the feel of speed that it shows to the viewer... IMHO that is. The last 2 I shot at 1/2000 to freeze the action in anticipation of photoshopping some motion blur into the shot. I obviously have notdone so yet but these are the befores and if I get to the planned edit I will post it up after.

    Nice shots there.
Brave on the slow shutter speeds, I always throw lots of those !

#3 the pan is good on the back wheel, and the front is distorted as its distance from the camera changes as you pan. Nice effect, once you get used to panning on a part of the car (front wheel, rear wheel, driver) you can tune it with practice.

Re: Official opening to the Ontario Race season this weekend

Thanks SW. I always enjoy your shots so your advice/critique is always appreciated.

What shutter speeds do you prefer when panning SW? Your panning shots are always so crisp. I went as low at 1/80th and as high as 1/160th but I was afraid to go much higher than 160 for fear of losing the wheel blur.

Next up is a Drift practice on Friday... weather permitting.

Re: Official opening to the Ontario Race season this weekend

Shutter speed depends how fast they're going !
1/640 second is easy on the corners, but freezes the wheels too much for some people - the manufacturer logo on the tyre should be blurred, but not much else.
1/400 is a good compromise into medium speed corners, and you need to be a bit more accurate.
1/320 or 1/250 you begin to lose sharpness with body roll or bumps, and the background begins to look smoother
Dropping down to 1/125 gives a good smooth background blur, but makes your shot more sensitive to changes of direction/angle - that can be a good thing !
Pushing the envelope down at 1/25 you need to be very accurate on the pan and lucky with bumps and braking, but gives great effects. Useful for creative pit stop shots.

Take a look at Darren Heath's work, he's got a reputation and can sell things that most of us wouldn't be able to.
