    Softball

Some snaps from a high school softball game. Shot with my Canon 70-200 2.8L through a chain link fence (always fun).

I like that last one, nicely timed action.
I see it was f/3.5 so how close were you to the fence?
I find I have to be almost touching it to get rid of the wires.

f3.5? Oops, I generally shoot at 2.8 to get the bokeh. I put the lens hood on and use it to rest against the fence for stability so the end of the lens is just a few inches away. I find this works best to get rid of the gray of the chain link fence.

    Re: Softball

I do the same with the 70-200, 300, or 100-400.
I put the lens centred over one of the link "holes" and then work out a hand (or monopod) position to keep it there while I shoot. Hand-held I'll probably have a hand in the link below the lens and rest the hood end on my hand.

That's exactly how I do it.

    Re: Softball

I've had to shoot through chain link this whole season and basically do just as you are to resolve the problem. Once you get use to the fact that you have to deal with the fence everything goes pretty smoothly. I have a lot of parents come up to me and ask how I can shoot through the fence like that. They have all kinds of problems with the p&s's trying to shoot from to far back.

Love that third shot fidgety, your really caught peak action there.
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

These are great. I also like the photo of the pitcher. My roommate used to be a college softball pitcher and I know she's gonna like it

I'm especially impressed that you shot these through a chainlink fence. Shooting at f/2.8 is pretty risky unless you know you can get good focus. But it sure worked out fine for you in these photos.

I was looking at the one shot where the player is sliding ( I assume into 2nd) at 1/2000 s why do you think there is still a blur on the ball? Is it the f2.8 DOF?

    Nice shots BTW.

I don't it's so much that the ball is blurry from its motion, it's that the ball is beyond the narrow plane of focus being created by narrow plane of focus as it was sailing past the shortstop covering the bag.
