I actually was fortunate enought to shoot one several years ago, with my 35mm. My dog almost caught it before it scrambled up the tree. I caught her in midair, while she leapt towards it. That would not have been good.

I'd never think to look into trees to find porcupines, and on that note, I wouldn't be looking for one of those critters anyway!
Maybe it's just me, but it looks as though there's a touch of camera shake/motion blur in that image? Shooting 1/200th @ 300mm w/o IS is tough. Were you using a monopod or tripod?

Hea, The face is soft. :-(
But not for lack of trying. I tried to use my bike to steady the camera.
The porcupine was only 10 feet away so there were tradeoffs.
@ f13 I had less than 2" of DOF.
